Reject Update: ‘Superbad’ Scores Again

What can I say? I was way off in my prognostications in the pre-weekend THE REJECT REPORT. I should have simply listened to all the people who said Superbad would repeat at number one, and been done with it, because War tanked, and Mr. Bean’s Holiday tanked, and The Nanny Diaries was a huge flop. It was a Super-bad week for everyone at the theaters, except of course for Superbad.

This is why they release movies in August- to get the flops out of the way. I found out that The Nanny Diaries actually opened in even more theaters that I had reported, something like 2,600. And it still finished in sixth place with only $7.8 mil. That’s pretty dismal, folks.

And Resurrecting the Champ did even worse. It got KO’d at the box office with a take of $1.8 million. Welcome to the dog days.

The weekend numbers courtesy of Box Office Mojo:

Release Studio Studio Estimate
Superbad Columbia $18,000,000
The Bourne Ultimatum Universal $12,361,000
Rush Hour 3 New Line $12,250,000
Mr. Bean’s Holiday Univeral $10,121,000
War Lionsgate $10,000,000
The Nanny Diaries MGM/Weinstein $7,811,000
The Simpsons Movie Fox $4,400,000
Stardust Paramount $3,954,000
Hairspray (2007) New Line $3,450,000
The Invasion Warner Bros. $3,140,000

I should also add that The Bourne Ultimatum’s second place showing now puts that movie at the grand total of $185,143,000 for its USA release.

As for Superbad, well, what can I say? Judd Apatow can’t go wrong as a producer these days. But it only made $18 million dollars. It’s a sure sign that the summer season is over when movies finish first with a take of $18 mil. Expect more numbers like this for the weeks ahead.

That’s all for now. Be sure to catch my prognostications later this week at THE REJECT REPORT, where hopefully I will get something right. For a change.
