The Sarah Connor Chronicles, FOX, Airs Monday 8/7c

Episode: “Complications” (Season 2, Episode 9)

Synopsis: After dispatching Cromartie, Sarah (Lena Headey) starts having nightmares that he might come back. She begs John (Thomas Dekker) to completely destroy the body, and Cameron (Summer Glau) tags along for moral support while she attempts to increase her ability to feel like a human. Meanwhile, Derek (Brian Austin Green) faces a dilemma when the BSG Sexpot Jessie (Stephanie Jacobsen) has kidnapped a seemingly innocent man who has a murky future history.

Review: It’s no surprise to anyone reading this that I have been awfully critical of this show in season two. Some might say that I’m too critical, but I feel that’s for history to decide.

When this episode opened in the middle of a dream sequence (a technique that I consider a crutch for lazy filmmaking), I rolled my eyes. I really didn’t want to hate another episode. It gets tiresome to bash on a series week in, week out.

However, once we got past the nightmare elements, this episode shaped up rather nicely. I knew that by burying Cromartie’s body at the end of the last episode rather than destroying it with thermite was a bad idea. Even though his chip is toast, the body is now missing, and where it ends up is a pretty interesting development, only revealed at the end of the episode. This should serve as a lesson to any future Terminator hunters… always destroy the body.

While Sarah is still struggling with her demons, she’s attempting to discover more about them, rather than moping around the house reading children’s books. This episode hints at a greater significance to Sarah Connor in Skynet’s plan, which is a welcome relief considering the title character of the series has been taking a back seat to everyone else for weeks.

Finally, I really dug the side story of Jessie and Derek. This opens a door to greater Skynet involvement in the present (which, to date, has almost entirely consisted of the Garbage Terminator meddling here and there). It also showed a deeper side to Derek, and to Jessie for that matter, which has been sorely lacking in these characters.
