Psych, USA, Airs Friday 10/9c
Episode: “He’s Dead” (Season Four, Episode 2)
Synopsis: Shawn and Gus crash a search party for a missing billionaire whose plane went down in the California woods. Shawn uses his fake psychic intuition (and a super-secret map) to find the plane. Inside, the billionaire asks him to find his killers. This leads Shawn and Gus to be hired by the man’s widow. Yet, when the “psychic vibrations” start to point to one of the family members, they’re fired from the case, only to jump back on it with the SBPD.
Review: After watching this show for a couple seasons, I think I have it completely figured out. It’s not really the quality of the mystery, but rather the path that our favorite fake psychics take to get there. The clues are always pretty random, and it’s almost impossible to fit everything together before Shawn sums it up.
And so we’re left with the situational comedy between the characters. In this respect, Shawn and Gus were spot-on in this episode – from Shawn dubbing his partner Mister Jazz Hands to their banter about Shawn’s lack of consideration for environmental practices.
As strong as Shawn and Gus’s interaction is in this episode, the rest of the cast is a bit soft. Rachel Leigh Cook comes back as Shawn’s girlfriend with a desire to meet his dad. And speaking of his dad, he shows up a few times, but the scenes can just be thrown away. Similarly, Lassie and Maggie just phone in their scenes as well.
So, Shawn and Gus were funny in this episode, but everyone else was a bit weak to me. Still enjoyable to watch.
Up Next: A trip out west (or rather, east, considering they guys live in Santa Barbara), where they help out James Brolin on his ranch.
