Episode: “Earth, Wind and… Wait for It” (Season Three, Episode 12)

Synopsis: A series of arsons in the Santa Barbara area put the police and fire department on alert. When Shawn and Gus find their way into a crime scene, they discover a body hidden in the walls, and a homicide investigation begins. With the help of a smokin’ hot arson investigator, Shawn and Gus try to solve a decade-old arson case as well.

Review: This week, it was nice to see Shawn and Gus utilized a bit more, with Gus having more to do than he did last week. Still, their banter was a bit down from last week. Sadly, no one hit the jackal switch for Gus.

Still, the comedy worked well with the boys trying to question firemen while they were taking an on-site fireman training course. Some plot points were not terribly well thought out, like when Gus was used as a CPR dummy (which would actually severely injure someone and possibly kill them if they weren’t actually in cardiac arrest), but it’s a television show, after all.

The smokin’ hot arson investigator (Milena Govich) was nice to look at, and her stand-off-ish nature with Shawn was funny enough. Sadly, she’s just going to be another character in a long line of guest stars who are mildly interested in Shawn but we never see again. Sigh… if only they could bring Kerry Washington back.

Maggie Lawson took a back seat on this episode, which is no surprise considering the screen time offered to Govich. And it was nice to see Bruce McGill getting some work, although he’s not as pretty as Lawson or Govich. But at least we got the full-length theme song in the opening credits.

Oh, and where was the freakin’ pineapple this week? I watched the show twice and couldn’t find it.
