Lost, ABC, Airs Wednesdays 9/8c

Episode: “Some Like it Hoth” (Season 5, Episode 13)

Synopsis: Miles (Ken Leung) deals with abandonment issues and Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Kate (Evangeline Lilly) try to keep their trip to save young Ben under wraps.

Review: So now we know how George Lucas came up with the story for The Empire Strikes Back. Hurley (Jorge Garcia) went back in time and wrote it for him! And you thought fans were pissed about Jar Jar Binks. Hurley really needs to stop trying to be Biff from Back to the Future 2, although it cracks us up.

Season 5 of Lost has changed our perspective on many characters, giving attention to the supporting stories and pushing Jack and a few of the Oceanic 6 to the background. It’s been a smashing success, this episode being no different. Some Like it Hoth was almost all about Miles (Ken Leung), the corpse whisperer as I like to call him, and Ken Leung brought the goods in a story we could really connect to.

Without getting too autobiographical, I was raised by a single mother because my father left us right after I was born. So it goes without saying that Miles’ predicament hit pretty close to home. But instead of going into a melodramatic flurry, the writing and Leung’s performance made for a very poignant tale. Lost has a way of doing that, and they have really started to flex their writing muscle this season.

As we had predicted, Dr. Pierre Chang (Francois Chau) is Miles’ father. Isn’t it great to actually guess something about Lost and be right for a change?

The friendship building between Miles and Hurley, who both can talk to the dead, works great. It’s almost a modern day Abbott and Costello, really. We have Miles, the straight-faced smart ass, who calls Hurley out on his simple behavior. But Hurley has a way of grounding Miles, so it evens out.

We never got a chance to mention this before, but how cool is it that Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite and Percy from The Green Mile are on the show? These are two great character actors, Jon Gries and Doug Hutchison, and the show has used them to their full potential.

When the show resumes, we are going to see how far Sawyer and the gang are willing to go to keep the secret about Ben’s (Michael Emerson) disappearance. Sawyer had to knock out Phil (Patrick Fischler) when he found the surveillance tape of them crossing into the Others’ territory. So what now? He won’t kill him, we think, but he can’t keep him captive forever. We smell drama!

Up Next Week: Lost takes a one week break.
