I think Faraday was desperate to change the past, but it will ultimately lead up to the same future, as it has been this entire time. I am loving this season, though it must have been so disappointing to Kate that after learning she needed to return to the island, she is leaving now. I don't understand why they even had to come back, but I'm sure we will learn soon!

D Rock,
LOST did cast Pellegrino for an undisclosed role, but apparently he's been filmed in various character background stories, like when Locke was pushed out the window. Also that he would show up towards the end of this season and into next. Therefore, to the original post I say yes, there is most definitely a Jacob.
I like how Kate and Jack have become the new Jack and Locke. But neither of them are being very logical.
What I don't like is Faraday's new theory that the timeline can be changed. When things got all fugged up from the time-skipping, it made sense that their own destiny can be controlled but the overall timeline can not be altered (as described by Miles to Hurley not so many episodes ago).

I heard rumors that...

**POSSIBLE SPOILER**

they cast someone for Jacob, and he is Mark Pellegrino, former abusive husband to Rita on Dexter.

I think we're about to find out that Richard, like Locke and Christian, was a man who was once dead and now revived by the island, hence his non-aging. But I'm curious to see how Locke can "kill Jacob" -- and I agree, seeing Richard and Ben out of the loop is fantastic.

this season has been great.

i'm not sure if anyone will agree with me, but: I think the time loop theory is correct. they've been stuck doing this over and over and over. i think that this time around, however, they will break free of the loop and make their own destiny.

also, watching ben when he's not in complete control is beyond joyful to watch.
