Could ‘No Heroics’ Be the Best New Show of the Fall… That You Can’t Watch?

Posted by Rob Hunter (rob@filmschoolrejects.com) on August 29, 2008

The Fall 2008 television season is almost upon us, but in all the coverage you’ll be seeing here at FSR and elsewhere one show is conspicuously (and criminally) absent. Imagine if “Heroes” and “Cheers” met in a night club, went back to “The Office,” and had mad, sloppy sex on the copy machine. The result would be “No Heroics”, a new series premiering September 6th on Britain’s ITV2. The show follows four friends and superheroes who spend their off-duty time hanging out at the local hero pub, The Fortress. They drink, curse, bitch, moan, and complain about the lack of respect they get from the populace at large. It’s a peculiarly British take on the world of superheroes, which means self-loathing, self-deprecation, and sexual innuendo. Sounds awesome doesn’t it? Check out the trailer and let us know if you agree.

No word yet if “No Heroics” will be aired on BBC America, so expect this show to up the traffic on the Bit Torrent sites. And for the record, I predict an American spin-off announcement by early next year.

  • I'd hate to be pessimistic but knowing the 'talent' involved in this from a myriad of other very poor shows I'm not very hopeful. Also I can't see ITV allowing the BBC to show this anywhere as there pretty big rivals over here. Also its worth noting that most ITV comedies are on the weak side, BBC comedy is where the 'offices' and 'extras' come to play.

I'm in total agreement with David. Admitedly, I haven't see the trailer, but ITV cannot be trusted when it comes to comedies... The BBC or Channel 4 are usually the ones you can rely on to provide superior comedy - anything of any note from our side of the pond has come from them. To give you an idea - they are the ones buying in and showing SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM etc to us and we applaud them for it!

  • @ David and T, you two are depressing me. The trailer looks funny and full of potential, so I'm going to hope you're both wrong... even if you do seem awfully convincing. Has ITV ever made anything good?
  • This reminds me of The Tick. When Timebomb first spoke, he sounded just like Bat Manuel. I'll give this a download once it hits.
  • Sorry to depress Rob but in order to inform my warning further I pulled up a list of ITV comedies and it was bomb after bomb after bomb. However I don't want to prejudge to harshly but based on previous records this is one to be wary of. Further on the BBC comedy front though BBC2 currently has a show that if it is not showing on BBCAmerica it is a crime - Mock the Week. Its a panel/stand-up show and the next big thing will come from this! If Russell Howard isn't given more starring vehicles soon something is wrong!
  • To me it feels like some kind of Giffen-De Mattheis Justice League. For those who remember, it was the middle 80s.

Looks great. Not been in the UK for a while, so I only recognise one guy, from The Office. It's true, ITV don't produce the goods quite like the BBC and C4 do. There must be a comedy that ITV made that wasn't a stinker though... The Grimley's, I did like that (I think it was ITV). Oh, and Spitting Image, one of the best things on TV when that was on (though not a sitcom). Anyway, what channel a show is broadcast on in the UK is irrelevant of if it shows on BBC America. BBC America isn't actually owned by the BBC, it's actually the Discovery Network (unless things have changed since last I saw). It might as well be called 'The British Channel'. There are definitely shows on now that are from ITV (Primeval), Channel 4 (Skins) and of course the BBC.

ITV have been much better in recent years. I give you Benidorm as a sterling example. I have hopes for No Heroics. Not high, but hopes nonethless.
