True Blood: The First Taste

True Blood, HBO, Airs Sunday 9pm

Episode: “To Love is to Bury” (Season 1, Episode 11)

Synopsis: Bill fulfills the sentence handed down to him by the Vampire hierarchy, creating a new challenge for himself to the tune of a rebellious new vampire.  Elsewhere, Sookie seeks comfort and protection in the arms of shape-shifter Sam while the killer strikes again, dumping Jason Stackhouse right back into hot water.

Review: There are two types of episodes when it comes to True Blood – character episodes and plot episodes.  To Love is to Bury falls into the former example, really delving back into the characters and expressing some new facets of their lives and personalities.  My two favorite characters, Sam and Jason, both have interesting turns and come more to the forefront.  Jason develops real emotions and grows as a character while Sam gets a lot of screen time and makes some headway with his relationship with Sookie.  All of the relationships seem genuine and are interesting and I won’t be shy about saying I’m a fan of Sookie + Sam, rather than that bloodsucker Bill.

Like I’ve said before, True Blood is good, if not great, every week.  It was fun to see the character shift from innocent religious girl to rebellious vampire hellion with the girl Bill was forced to change.  We’re also treated to seeing more of how Vampires work, specifically in how new vampires are created.  On the troublesome side of things, Tara finds herself in the lockup and gets into a confrontation with her mother – is anything ever going to go right for Tara?  Things may just change for her now that she’s been bailed out by a beautiful stranger- though it may be for the worse.

There is only one episode left in the season and it promises to be a big one.  Undoubtedly some will die, some will cry, and many will fight.  Hopefully many questions will be answered and we’ll get some things to look forward in a second season, which must assuredly already be in the planning stages.  If you’ve fallen behind, catch up and fast!

Up Next Week: The season finale!

I'm pretty sure the woman that bailed out Tara is the same woman that was walking naked with the pig, that caused Tara to crash at the end of the last episode. This should be interesting since she's way too rich to be a social worker. I'm guessing she could be some type of witch or something but I could be wrong.

I wonder if Rene really is the killer. I thought he was last week but they could just be leading us on. Thoughts?

Good episode and I can't wait till the season finale.

What I am really enjoying about this show is the way it reveals that there is a supernatural world far larger than even the vampires realize (Sookie's telepathy, Sam's shape shifting, etc.) and it does a wonderful job of marrying that supernatural vibe to some good ol' Southern gothic mystery.

I thought the Sookie + Sam angle was cute, but I feel that poor Sam had his whole heart in it while Sookie was just leaning on the good boy until her bad boy showed his face. Had Bill not stormed in like he did, she probably would have given Sam the "just a friend" speech and given him a dog biscuit for his trouble.

I'd actually like to see Tara and Sam make it. If she can stop lashing out at everything, she might see Sam's a good dude (I hope so. You can never tell with this show.)

As usual, LaFayette is the most reasonable and competent character on the show, which means they're probably going to kill him.

I think the butt nekkid lady (Michelle Forbes) trying to pull in Tara is a witch or something to that effect. Either way, I fear it doesn't bode well for Tara.

Comic-book geek moment: Am I the only one who thinks the guy who plays Eric should be playing Thor when they make that movie?

Clips from the season finale show the nekkid lady speaking to Tara during the daytime, so I don't think she's a vampire. I do believe she's got some supernatural mojo too though.
  • The naked chic aka counselor lady, whatever her name is, isn't a vampire because it was daylight when she bailed Tara out and drove her to her home. I think she is some other type of supernatural character and it won't bode well for Tara, the poor girl.

So, I do think that Rene is the killer, based on the fact that as soon as Jason mentions to only two other people, the killer strikes again within hours. As well as the fact that he left out the part about him not doing the V also, so the killer was acting off of information rather then knowledge.

As for everyone else, i want to see Tara and Sam do well together, only to see Sookie end up with Bill. He has been trying to deal with everything and do what he has to in order to be with her, even getting to the point that he went against alot of things he stood for and other vampires that he knows will hold the favor to the T.

But alas, cant wait for the last one, and then the second season. I just hope they can hold onto a good plot line into the second season, that always seems to be the hard part, when a show ends up getting signed for another season and alot of the story was made to end after 12(ish) episodes.

Oh! and who the hell said shows could go from 26 episodes down to like 7 a year? Whass'up wit'hat??
  • BmOvie74 - I'm following your instincts on Renee as the possible killer. I didn't want to believe it, but after this last episode I think it's a strong possibility. I hope the show it leading us wrong.

bigK - I've read a comments from others suggesting the actor could play Thor and I have to agree. Every time I see him that's all I see...so if he's not even on Marvel's radar I'll have a hard time envisioning whoever they decide to cast. LoL

I've really become attached to this show and I'm bummed next week is the season finale. I finally feel as if the characters are really coming into their own and showing more depth, especially Jason. Since the beginning I've been rooting for Sookie and Bill, but after this last episode I found myself liking Sam a whole lot more, he could be good for Sookie. I did feel bad for Bill when Sookie kicked him out. In fact, I'm a little annoyed at Sookie who is taking advantage of Sam's feelings.
  • bummer...my post was too long and I had to split it up... lol.

I don't have a good feeling about that counselor woman who bailed Tara out of jail. Especially since she's the reason Tara crashed her car in the first place. Oh and her mom blowing her off? That was harsh. I think Tara will be better off without her mom and I have a feeling her adventure is just beginning. I do hope she starts to back off on the constant mouthing off, it's a little tired. The walls do appear to be slowly breaking down.

No, it was nighttime when she bailed her out. However, I missed what big K said in the clips for the season finale, so if he's right then she's not a vampire.
  • Arou101
Remember, we've only seen the naked woman at night... she could be a vampire too. Although, I can't explain the pig.

One thing I'm not liking about the show is the introduction of so many supernatural things within the first season. I mean telepathy and vampires are a lot of story to work with, and now we have shape shifters, a possible witch, and a mention of werewolves. In a way I like it, but it just seems like they're trying to throw as many fantasy elements into a show that was advertised as a parallel world to ours just with the inclusion of vampires.

Renee as the killer sucks, I like that Cajun goof. It makes a lot of sense though. The one thing that doesn't make sense is why all the women were strangled except Sookie's grandmother, her entire throat was ripped open. I'm sure it will be explained. Overall the show was good, hopefully the finale brings some closure to a lot of avenues yet to be closed and doesn't leave us with a WTF? cliffhanger at the end.
  • damn, was it nightime? I could have sworn the sun was out when they pulled up to the house, but then again...maybe not...cause wasn't poor Amy meeting her demise? Something tells me that the woman isn't a vampire though.
