TV Review: Psych 3.10 – Six Feet Under the Sea

Episode: “Six Feet Under the Sea” (Season Three, Episode 10)

Synopsis: Shabby the Sea Lion, a beloved Santa Barbara marine hero, has been found dead after being released into the wild. Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dulé Hill) start an investigation, and when Lassie (Timothy Omundson) and Jules (Maggie Lawson) perform an autopsy, they discover that Shabby has been murdered! Shawn and Gus then stumble on a larger conspiracy behind the marine mammal’s death.

Review: Although there was a special Christmas episode a few weeks back (“Christmas Joy,” which I completely missed in the holiday shuffle… sorry about that, folks), this is Psych’s return to the air with all new episodes, and this was probably one of the best ones this season.

After the bank episode, which got a little too serious at times, Shawn and Gus are back with all the silliness that makes the show great. First, they’re investigating a murder of a sea lion. How cool is that? Hilarious! Then there’s a whole sub-plot of how Shawn wants to ride on a dolphin, and he really tries to make that happen, even when they break into the marine aquarium.

There’s also a nice nod to a budding relationship between Shawn and Jules, which has been hinted around since season one, and this season there’s been some movement in that direction. Lassie is as annoying as ever, and it’s nice to once again see Shawn and Gus pull his ass from the fire.

But the best parts of this episode is indicative of the best parts of the series. It’s the banter between Shawn and Gus that makes this work. With allusions to George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight to an off-the-wall discussion of Rutger Hauer’s ancestry, the chemistry between James Roday and Dulé Hill is what makes things great on Psych.

And crap! I didn’t see the pineapple this week. Gotta go watch it again on the DVR.

Up Next: Detective Lassiter is being investigated for a murder, and his only hope is Shawn and Gus, and his reluctant use of Shawn’s “powers.”

    I didnt like this episode. It was boring to me.
    I too missed the pneapple joke, prolly bc it was such a boring ep.

    This was one of the best episodes yet. This is also hands down the best show on t.v.

    I loved this episode! I thought it was a great return for the season! I especially loved the "OMG, I killed him!" diversion. Pretty hilarious :)
  • Disappointed
    This was one of the worst episodes in the history of the show, as was "Christmas Joy". If the three after this had been this bad, I might have stopped watching the series.
