TV Review: Psych – Truer Lies

Episode: “Truer Lies” (Season Three, Episode 14)
Synopsis: While playing putt-putt in the SBPD halls, Shawn and Gus stumble across a new case in which Lyin’ Ryan (Jonathan Silverman), a compulsive liar and nuisance to the police, has been brought in on murder charges. Shawn sympathizes with Ryan’s plight of never being able to tell the truth, and he sets out to prove the man is not guilty of killing his landlord.
Review: I suppose that Jonathan Silverman fans are going to be the target audience for this one. While the antics of Shawn and Gus (including Shawn’s tepid relationship with Bigfoot and Gus’s insistence that he’s “insane in the membrane”) can be funny at times, the writing of the show seemed a little more tailored to the guest star.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t wish any ill will to Jonathan Silverman, but I just don’t find him that funny. Consider it penance for his so-called hit show “The Single Guy.” A good guest star now and then is cool, but Jonathan Silverman? Wasn’t his latest project “Beethoven’s Big Break”?
The writing just seemed a bit disjointed. The script really struggled to force an appearance of Shawn’s dad, while Lassie and Jules were just secondary to the whole thing. Gus spent more time just not believing Shawn and again threatening to go back to his day job of selling pharmaceuticals. Finally, the show wrapped up a little too nicely in the end, and Shawn didn’t get much of a chance to do his whole fake-psychic thing.
Still, even a mediocre episode of Psych is a fun hour of television, and this one had a level of enjoyment to it… but that had nothing to do with Jonathan Silverman.
