House: Adverse Events

House, MD, FOX, Airs Tuesday 8/7c

Episode: “Adverse Events” (Season 5, Episode 3)

Synopsis: An artist finds that the paintings he makes don’t come out quite as good as he thinks they do… in fact, they are completely distorted. After being assaulted by a client who is not happy with his work, he is brought to the hospital so that he can be examined. House, meanwhile, has hired a private investigator to pry into the lives of those who work for him and around him. Using this information, he creates some tension in the hopes of motivating his staff. His P.I. has other motives as well, to get a date with Dr. Cuddy, who is trying to use him to get information on House. With secrets being revealed by all the characters, the team gathers more and more information about the artist’s life in order to treat him.

Review: Glad to report that after missing last week’s episode, I wasn’t too lost here. This episode was a little less House like than normal, but I think it was a good thing. House comes off as even more of an a-hole (pardon my French), trying to use information that he’s gathered through a PI against his staff, and his boss.

The medical case was pretty tame in this episode, though it turned out to be pretty cool in the end. Then again, I’m into that stuff so if you’re not, it probably didn’t matter. The emphasis was wasn’t on the condition this week, rather it was on the interactions between House and his co-workers. He seemed to be trying to teach them a lesson, especially Dr. Taub, who we find out has some issues at home that he wasn’t sharing with his wife. We also find out that Dr. Kutner once set a world record for crawling, and that Thirteen pays too much for her car.

Despite the episode not feeling like a normal House episode, I was still drawn in and captivated by the story. The show is taking the core of what makes House so good, and giving it a fresh twist. Of course, that’s only my opinion.

Up Next Week: Nothing.. cuz house won’t be airing again until Oct 14. After that though, House finds out that his father has passed away. While away from his team, House must help them with their differential diagnosis of a Chinese woman who collapses while searching for her birth parents.

They are definitely shoe-horning this PI character into the series just so they can give him his own spinoff later. When Cuddy decided that she 'liked' this new character, I just rolled me eyes. Of /course/ all of the main cast have to love the guy, so that the viewers will love him too and follow him to his own show! genius! bleghh
  • Spinoff? I dunno, I think the PI character only works because he's the anti-House. They're both highly neurotic but where House has a devious sarcasm, the PI is unable to lie, which will make for laughs, if nothing else, for now.

Still one of the top 5 funniest shows on TV, IMO.

I really dont see a spin-off coming for the PI. (Sidebar: is that the dude from Married With Children? haha)

I thought it was a great episode, even though it wasn't so focused on the case. Generally, I don't like it when the story is more about what's going on outside of the case, but it worked out well this week.
  • That's Michael Weston. He was in Garden State, on Scrubs, and a few good episodes of Six Feet Under where he terrified Michael C. Hall's character. He's decent.
  • Jad
Well I was basing my spin-off talk on articles like this:

    http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/05/07/a-house-spin-...

"TV Guide columnist Michael Ausiello reveals that FOX and NBC Universal are developing a spin-off for the medical hit series House. Next season, a male private investigator will be introduced on House and stick around for a few episodes. If fans respond well to the character, he may get his own series. No more details are given about this "House: P.I." spin-off."

and this is from back in May
  • I actually liked the PI character and I really liked that he finally gave Cuddy a love interest, instead of her and House giving each other a "look" once every season. It was really weird to not see Wilson this time around, hopefully he'll be back next time.
  • Joe
Yeah it really was weird not to see Wilson. As for the spinoff, I don't really see that much potential in that kind of show.. but you never know, stranger things have happened.
  • Debbie
Horribly disjointed boring episode. When there's no Wilson, the episode is very close to unwatchable. And the PI liking Cuddy. Don't think that dog is gonna hunt. She exhibits the same level of chemistry she has with House - None.

I'm so glad we have Wilson in eppys 4 and 5, which I can't wait to see.
  • Jean
I think the PI guy was a substitute for Wilson's companion. Isn't it interesting how, unlike other stories, House's personality doesn't evolve with the emergence of new roles. I mean, the team has changed and Wilson has left but House is still House. New characters don't come in to change House, but they fit into his personality.
