TV Review: Heroes 3.8 – Villains

Heroes: Villains

Heroes, NBC, Airs Mondays 9/8c

Episode: “Villains” (Season 3, Episode 8)

Synopsis: Hiro’s spirit walk takes him back in time one year, to the events surrounding the “death” of Arthur Pertrelli (Robert Forster).

Review: So they did it this season. The inevitable flashback episode. I can not stress how much I do not like this style of storytelling. It can be effective when done in smaller doses throughout a story, but if you’re going to spend an entire episode focusing on the past it had better unveil information that is important, not letting us know that Angela Pertrelli (Cristine Rose) makes a hell of an arsenic and artichoke soup. Aside from some clever editing, which I really enjoyed, the episode didn’t do much for me.

At the end of the show I found myself asking, “what was the point?” The point behind the episode was supposedly for Hiro (Masi Oka) to go on a spirit walk in order to learn about the past and his enemy. So then the show negates all that by having Arthur Pertrelli show up right after? Didn’t we watch two episodes this season that focused on Hiro trying to get accepted into the gang of villains so that he could get into Pinehearst? Now we find that it was all for nothing? Come on.

It seems like the show has gotten a bit off track and is trying put the train back on the rails by revisiting season one, their most successful season to date. It reminds me of a boyfriend who cheats on his lover and then brings a scrapbook to them to prove that they didn’t use to be so bad. I’m not saying Heroes is bad but there needs to be some soul searching done, and I don’t mean Elle’s (Kristen Bell) attempt to save Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

Speaking of Sylar, is there anybody else that thinks when he goes into Gabriel mode that he looks eerily similar to Rivers Cuomo, lead singer of Weezer? If they have a Halloween episode next year they HAVE to get him to play that part. Back on topic, I was originally interested in the blurs in the morality of each character. Now I feel like the show is trying too hard. Sometimes it is better to just have good battle evil and leave it at that. I also felt like Sylar revealed his powers way too quickly to Elle. It was almost instantaneous. Maybe Sylar was just that desperate … or maybe the show is skipping important moments that need to develop between characters. You decide.

And is it me or is the Heroes community one big family tree? Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig), Claire’s (Hayden Panettiere) biological mother, is Flint’s sister? So that makes Flint Claire’s uncle. Ooh, do you think we will see this play out at some point? Let’s keep it simple. I shouldn’t have to be scribbling out notes like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind to follow a story. (Quick side note. Jessalyn Gilsig does not look anything like Hayden Panettiere. If anything she should have played Sarah Michelle Gellar’s mother on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Alas, you can’t turn back time and this is the state of things for sci-fi baby’s mamas)

One last thought. I can’t stand the Arthur Pertrelli storyline. It is wasting precious time in episodes that could be spent on a much simpler and more effective means of storytelling. Do we have to have the Shakespearian power struggle for the world to be in peril? Now more than ever I am wishing that Heroes would go back to the ways of old. Save the cheerleader, save the world. It shouldn’t be save the cheerleader, who is related to this person, this person, and this person, save the world. But before you do make sure you don’t kill Sylar, Angela, Flint, or pretty much any villain in our universe because they’ve got a heart too! I am usually a “things aren’t always black and white” kind of guy, but in this case I think they need to be a bit more.

Up Next Week: After a preemptive strike against Hiro and Ando (James Kyson Lee) in Africa, Arthur Pertrelli orders Knox (Jamie Hector) and Flint (Blake Shields) to hunt down his son Peter (Milo Ventimiglia) and granddaughter Claire. Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) is stunned to learn his father is alive and leading a villainous charge to worldwide destruction. Meanwhile, back at Pinehearst, Sylar (Zachary Quinto) has a charged confrontation with Elle. Suresh begins testing his new, combined superpower formula. Later, with others dead, injured or on the run, Matt (Greg Grunberg) attempts to wake Angela (Cristine Rose).

You might not want say Heroes is bad, but after last night's snooze fest I will - Heroes has crossed the line to bad television. The inner geek still hopes that we'll see a change and the story to will even out into something less convoluted. Of course any real change won't come about until we get new episodes with new writers, who have yet to be replaced and then there is no guarantee we'll see a change for good. I'll stick it out till the end of this season unless we get more bumbling characters who continue to make decisions that make no sense and seem completely out of personality.

My heart and head say no. My inner geek says..please just watch one more episiode..it will be good. IT NEVER IS.

Each episode this season has been akin to ridiculous drivel. No story co-ordination. No real sense of anticipation. No outstanding characters. Nothing. Why do i bother, i ask myself constantly.
  • "Convoluted" is a word often used to criticize a story. But what's more convoluted than LOST? And I've loved pretty much every minute of that show so far.

But HEROES is just plain overstuffed with storylines that are either:

    a) dull, or

    b) stupid, or

    c) pointless, or

    d) utterly nonsensical.

This is a show that deserves a good cancellation headshot.

i find my self frustrated at the end, some people might not like hiro but i hope there
is a twist to this, otherwise hero is just done with... and that totally sucks cause he
really is that one hope and uncorrupted person that is a true hero.

that is a big thing in this story, my thoughts are... there leaning so far on the
villians that there either going to make the heroes have comebacks or villians are
just gonna flat out win this season since the first was all about heroes saving the
day.. and 2 was just a bridge for this season.

Lost is convoluted, but in a good way, well at least this last season ...sort of...lol. I have my issues with Lost, but they are not nearly as bitter, at least I've been entertained. I don't mind a storyline I have to follow, but the back and forth with Heroes is plain annoying. I feel as if the show is going more backward than forward. As of this moment all characters with the acception of Sylar and HRG are expendable.

I have to say that I am still enjoying Heroes. Yes...inner geek is mostly to thank for this, but I will never tire of seeing people/objects being moved/set alight/turned into ice. However, I do think the story has lost its way.

I agree with the article. Please stop with the stupid flashback episodes...I set my dvr to record the series, and ashamedly get quite excited to have an hour to myself when I can sit down and watch the next episode. Episode 8, was disappointing. I had been away, and was really looking forward to watching it, and may as well have watched the DVD box set of Season 1.

Nonetheless, I hope it gets its act together so we can all say that it was worth it...I seem to remember the first season losing its way a little mid way through...but maybe that's just hopeful...

Sylar isn't played by Sendhil, he's played by Zachary Quinto. Sendhil plays Mohinder? Just sayin..
  • @ Jen
I'm not sure what you're referring to. All the actors' names are correctly attributed to their character. Sendhil's name isn't mentioned but I think we all know Sylar isn't played by Sendhil. "Just saying .." ;)

Any thoughts you'd like to share about the show?
  • I'm hopelessly disappointed in Heroes. It's gone so far astray. Though, as much as I detest pointless flashbacks, I was actually glad for this past Monday's episode because it went back to Season One, which was brilliant, and reminded me of why I liked the show.

Unfortunately, it was just a gimmick, like the ones that kept all of the Heroes alive this season after they'd been killed ... I think the flashback episode was a cynical ploy by the writers to try and prey upon that fondness for the first season, to keep people tuning in to the aimless dreck of the third season.

I'm going to keep watching, because I hope it will get better ... but I don't expect it to. The show has lost its nut and it doesn't seem apt to find it again.

Nice site, by the way; I dig the color scheme and layout...

They need to get some new writers for this show and fast.
