TV Review: Heroes 3.5 – Angels and Monsters

Heroes: Angels and Monsters

Heroes, NBC, Airs Mondays 9/8c

Episode: “Angels and Monsters” (Season Three, Episode Three)

Synopsis: Claire (Hayden Panettiere) goes hunting for villains, Hiro (Masi Oka) and Ando (James Kyson Lee) look for answers to who’s behind the curtain, and the Pertrelli family finds they will have to set out an additional plate of China at dinner.

Review: “Angels and Monsters” represented a significant character piece in the arc of the Heroes storyline. Countless times in the episode we see characters make choices that definitely don’t fit in line with what we would consider heroic. Hiro’s Ginsu knife treatment of Ando was something I definitely didn’t see coming, but it also made me think, “Well, do you really wonder why he wants to kill you in the future?” And Claire is now learning that life isn’t black and white, something that will most likely drive her away from H.R.G. (JackĀ  Coleman) and, against all odds, near Sylar (Zachary Quinto). (Hmm, could we insert President Bush into this episode? He could have learned a lot about ethics. Insert your own villain joke here. And I’m done with the political commentary … now.)

But moral lines in the sand aren’t exclusive to cheerleaders and time jumpers. We see this as Daphne (Brea Grant) starts to realize that she isn’t quite as super-bad as we thought. Her final scene with Holo-Linderman (Malcolm McDowell), as we will now call him, was effective in showing us that not all characters in the show have to be locked inside a rigid archetypal box. Daphne and Sylar’s stories are beginning to stand out as two of the best on the show. They also show promise in connecting to the lives of other major storylines through complicated relationships. And is there any show other than “Lost” that has more loose ends to tie up?

I can never really know how to feel about Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy). For so long we were led to believe he was the reliable scientist that cats with superpowers could come to for answers. Now he’s going The Fly on us, something that I am sure Jeff Goldblum spit his beer out over when he saw the scene where his neighbor was hanging up on the wall like a bad Andy Warhol art piece. What we can expect from Suresh in the future is anyone’s guess. But I do know this, he isn’t getting his security deposit back when he decides to move out of his loft.

And is it me or is the Pertrelli family the most dysfunctional group this side of a Lohans/Hiltons reality show? Not only is Mrs. Pertrelli (Cristine Rose) turning Peter (Milo Ventimiglia), Sylar, and Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) against each other, but now we find out that Papa Pertrelli (a nickname that should be straight out of Grand Theft Auto) is pulling the strings in a plot to get all the villains grouped together. All we need now is a creepy kiss scene between cameo siblings Angelina Jolie and James Haven and Heroes will have sealed the label as most F’ed up family on television. But NBC might want to rethink the must see TV slogan after that.

Speaking of creepy, the John Wayne Gacy-esque villain (David H. Lawrence) that was mind-raping (that’s a new word, by the way. Feel free to use it … but not too often.) was one of the most “ewwwww” moments I have ever seen on the show. Hopefully it will set up for a chance to see Claire prove herself truly heroic by saving her biological mother, Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig), from the hands of the bastardized Bozo the Clown. Maybe they can face off in superpower Bucket Bonanza Prize Game.

Heroes has often been criticized for having too many episodes that are overall ambiguous in nature. This time it’s the strength of the episode. The Dark Knight succeeded because it was a story about a hero whose moral character would be put to the test, and questioned how far he would go to preserve what he believed in. The characters on “Heroes” are now facing that same challenge, many of them now finding their fundamental foundations are crumbling under their feet. It’s an idea that is transforming the third season of “Heroes” into what many fans had wanted last year.

Up Next Week: Impressed by his sudden ruthlessness, Knox (Jamie Hector) and Daphne invite Hiro into the Pinehearst fold, and give him an assignment. Peter goes to Pineheart looking for answers, and Claire sets off to save Meredith from a clownhouse, one probably filled with funhouse mirrors that totally make her cheerleader thighs look big.

I've gotta disagree with you there. This episode made the entire series just fall
apart completely for me. Yeah sure, I do like the ambiguous nature and how each
character is ridden with morality issues but story-wise, it's not solid. First of all,
since we find out that it's Parkman pulling the strings under the command of Arthur
Petrelli, we have to ask the question "Why the hell is Nathan Petrelli still alive?"

Second, why is Knox suddenly less than par in terms of badassness as a villain.
Same goes with Adam Monroe? When Monroe was introduced in Season 2 and Knox
introduced in the first episode of this season, these guys were bonafide threats.
Knox is simply just a pawn and Monroe was subdued pretty damn fast. Both
characters should have a fairly larger agenda considering their abilities and threat
    level.

On a side note, I also wonder why aren't Claire and Adam Monroe super strong and
super fast? Their ability is called "rapid cell regeneration", am I not correct? So if
Adam Monroe is as cunning as he is supposed to be and if Claire is so determined
to learn how to fight as she says she is, why wouldn't they rack up the brain power
to just hit the gym for 24 hours straight? If they're constantly tearing up muscle
tissue and accumulating strength and fast-twitch muscle fibers, they should be
    pretty damn strong and quick.

Also, where does all of this fit in to the future that Peter Petrelli just came back from
when we see the sides being twisted? What about the vortex guy? He was a waste
of minutes on the episode. How come Monroe isn't pulling anymore strings? Why did
Angela Petrelli send Hiro and Ando on their own to dig him out? What about the
    Haitian?

I understand that it seems like the writers are just trying to pretend like season 2
never happened and introduce more excitement into the show but they've got just
as much potential to completely ruin the show as they do to make it as awesome as
it was season 1. I really like the promise of the puppet guy - I mean he seems like
an legitimate villain but you can bet your ass they're going to make him comical like
    the other ones.

    Harold, you are an idiot.

This show continues to piss me off. We've got so many characters now that we can't possibly keep track of what's going on with everyone and a ton of them are winding up in limbo, which is stupid. Claire's flying boyfriend? Kristin Belle's character? The mimic girl from New Orleans? Molly? Micah? How about instead of introducing a handful of new characters every episode, we explain what happened to the countless people that just disappeared from the show? At least they know to kill useless characters off now instead of sending them to limbo with no explanation.

    @ Komikon

You're the one who is the idiot! I agree with both opinions from 'SMURF' and 'HAROLD' I'm beginning to lose my interest on the show quickly I had to watch each episodes like 2-3 times just to understand the story. Very convoluted I'm so confused but hey as long as Hayden is it I'm still watching.

I love this show. It's take on the concept of superheroes and villains is very fresh and it's treatment of their individual psyches is very interesting.
This is what I thought about the show during it's first two seasons. I'm hoping that the motivations for some of the characters becomes more clear during the coming episodes, but right now it seems that this season's "theme" is simply take every well-established character and just flip them into their opposites.
A lot of the "good" are somehow becoming chaotic and uncontrollable. Sylar, who previously was cruel, demented, and by definition, a serial killer is now treated as being "misunderstood" and "trying to change himself for the better." I think I liked him much better when he was pretending to be a nice guy.
To agree with Smurf, what the hell happened to all the new characters from S.2? It's no longer that surprising when they place a character on the back burner for a long time and then "dramatically" reintroduce them at the end of an episode.
I like to be surprised, like everyone else, by plot developments/betrayals/alliances etc., but I'm reallt getting tired of all the hairpin turns all the characters are making. EXAMPLE:
Hiro and Ando are sitting at a bar talking about how they made mistakes and what a hero should be, literally 35 seconds later, Knox plucks a oddly-placed scimitar from behind the bar and Hiro just decides to stab Ando. I know, I know, Ando betrays him in the future! Blah blah.
It's fun to have these kind of twist maybe once or twice an episode. It keeps things fresh and interesting, but the majority of this episode was twist after twist. I don't know what these writers are on, but I think they need to ease off a bit.
  • BumFunAnyone?
Harrold you are retarded. Reg, i can't believe you watched it 3 times, how stupid are you?
Its a good show S2=Failed but S3 is beggining to become AWESOME!
So back off and leave it alone.
  • BumFunAnyone?
    BumFunAnyone? Yes.
  • I LOVE MEN
    Who wants a blow-job?
  • Sylars Granny
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    I'm evil!
  • Harold
I like how everyone that's been saying I'm an idiot or retarded hasn't substantiated
a single thing they've said except by saying something like "this show is awesome"
or something of the like. Obviously, it's just a show but it's definitely a show that
could be a little more processed through the editing room. And when you say
"awesome" if you mean by extremely convoluted and confusing and a direct ripoff
from X-Men, yes that would be "awesome." But that generally doesn't fall under my
    definition.
