Entourage: Gotta Look Up to Get Down

Entourage, HBO, Airs Sundays 10pm E/P

Episode: “Gotta Look Up To Get Down” (Season Five, Episode Seven)

Synopsis: Vince gets a gig doing a photo shoot with a model, but trouble arises when sparks fly between the two.  Eric and the two hapless losers, Drama and Turtle, follow along.  Elsewhere, Ari tries to work some business while attending a funeral for a dead studio head and is surprised when he’s offered the dead man’s job.

Review: Fantastic episode right up until Vince acts like a selfish little shit… but I should start from the beginning.  Ari attends the funeral of Alan Gray, the studio head who died on the golf course last week, and is his usual insensitive, business-minded self.  He tries to work his magic to get Vince back onto Smokejumpers, but instead, the president of the studio’s parent company offers Ari the dead man’s job.  It’s a legitimate and believable move in a town where Ari knows all the players and has paid his dues for many years.  He’s thrilled by the idea, both for the monetary rewards that come with it as well as what it means for his favorite client, Vince.  But when he tells Vince and asks what he thinks, Vince says “I think I’d like us to finish what we started together.”

What the fuck is that?  So because Vince has made piss poor decisions about his own career that have knocked him back down to the cellar he thinks Ari should stay immobile with him?  And judging from the look on Ari’s face he actually may let Vince’s idiotic opinion sway his decision!  This is a no-brainer for the character of Ari. No real life agent/head of an agency would say no to this offer.  More important though, this would be a great move for the show.  It would open up so many more avenues of adventure and comic fun for Ari’s asinine behavior, and sure he’d be fired by next season and have to go back to being an agent again, but c’mon… this will piss me off if he passes on the offer simply to placate Vince.

Meanwhile… Vince’s gig with the supermodels ends up going nowhere professionally, but as is always the case the lucky as hell quartet ends up on a private jet for a mini-sojourn with the Amazonian ladies.  All well and good, and I hate to start sounding like Turtle… but when the hell are we going to see some boobies and ass again?  And did anyone else notice what was playing on the flat screen TV in Ari’s office early in the episode?  Could that be a Max Payne trailer?  Hmmm…

Do you see potentially awesome storylines if Ari accepts the new job?  Or do you think he should decline the offer?

Absolutely loved this episode. Showed some nice colors to the character of Ari. He should
definatly take the job. I hope they show us some Geneva footage, since i live there.

    Awesome Episode.

p.s: that was the Max Pain trailer.
  • damn i so agreed with each word of what you said. i do think he shoudl take the job and vince shoudl stop bein a lil puss and man up to his decisions and his work.
I do want ari to stay an agent but only for nostalgia reasons , aside from that the show gain some much needed story lines and even more humour if ari took the studio head position!

....i still want to see a real life vincent chase as aquaman movie..as long as dom aint in it.

The main point here being, why would Ari not take the job. The love connection moment at the end of this episode did reveal Ari has true feelings towards his friend Vince, but that shouldn't affect him acting in everybody's best interest, including his own. If Ari takes the job as a studio head, Vince would be set, the studio would be set, and Ari would be set. How bad can it be for a struggling actor like Vince if your ex-agent/ good friend takes the job as a studio head? Can you see any more storm clouds on the horizon, because I cant.
  • I'm not even sure what Vince and Ari "started together." And could it not be accomplished with Ari as studio head? Isn't that a dream move for Ari? Agent to Super Agent to Head of Agency to Studio Head? That's the dream. Vince is a little idiot who has screwed up everything over and over again, and is poised to ruin the lives/careers of both E and Ari. The show must go forward with this storyline, its awesome.

I think they will have Ari take the job, and we will see an episode where a bunch of different agents go after both Ari's clients and his spot at the agency. They've put effort in to keeping both Amanda and Adam Davies around so I bet Vince will end up with one of them for a while and it will make Ari crazy. Also, the new job will probably not be good for Ari in the long run. He's going from being at the top of his own company to a small part of a huge corporation, and he will probably end up either going back to his agency or starting all over again with a new one.

I love this episode. It's probably my favorite since Season 2. And while Vince did say "he
would have liked to finish what we started", he did follow it up with his trademark "but you
got to do what you got to do", which was the same advice he gave E, when the studio
wanted the Smoke Jumpers script, but not with him. I don't think his remark is in any way a
ball and chain to keep Ari as his agent. But we'll see what happens, in the next episode.
  • This season is easily gearing this show back to greatness; they said bye bye to Billy, they are upping the comedy, and the stakes on the main characters.

This is one of those moments in the series arc that could make or break the entire show. If Ari doesn't take the job the writers/directors/producers are telling us they are fine with the direction and one oar circular rowing that these charactors are going in; if Ari does take the job they are telling us that there is real growth in overall plot, chartactors, and theme. I love this idea.

Now of course there is the real possibility of this show pulling a tried and true Entourage theme where they show us something interesting and than laughing it away with some asinine character screw up. I'm tried of that. I don't think any character (or real person) would turn this down. Too many possibilities and too much power to turn down. Vince not being on board shows that he doesn't understand how the business works and it's a mirror of his career and how his friends think. I imagine Drama (as stupid as he is) understand what this could truly mean for all of them.

I cannot wait to see where this takes the show
