Burn Notice, USA, Airs Thursday 10pm
Episode: “Hot Spot” (Season 2, Episode 11)
Synopsis: When Sam wants to score some primo Dolphins tickets, he agrees to help out a friend in need. Or more accurately, agrees to get Michael to help. The duo recruit the always gung-ho Fiona, dress up like total badasses, and declare war against a local car thief. Along the way, Michael makes headway in finding out who put a bomb in his apartment while Fiona finds herself in a hot situation.
Review: This has got to be one of the cooler episodes in awhile, if just for the awesome slow motion shots of the trio walking around armed to the teeth in pristine black suits. That’s the kind of thing I do for fun because it just feels good. Admit it, you liked watching those parts. The group also got clever again and delivered some good lines. While giving a thug a list of reasons to leave Miami, Michael calmly asserts “Plus, your place is on fire” as Fiona lights the bar. Badass. Bruce Campbell is sharp as ever – hopefully Hollywood gives this guy another shot at the big top, he deserves it.
We also get the requisite spy trick for the episode – this one involves stopping bullets. If you’ll recall this weeks Boiling Point, I talked about how neither a car door nor a normal sized book would stop a bullet. But if you take a huge book, like a phone book, and shove it inside of a car door as impromptu armor, it will stop most handgun rounds. Good trick, good execution, very fun stuff.
The continuing story with Carla, well, continues, and not much new happens. Michael plays her for a bit of a fool regarding the identity of the bomber, though it appears that she may not be the evil witch he thinks of her. It becomes more and more apparent that she is just another cog in the machine. I wouldn’t be surprise, or disappointed, if there ended up being a touch of romantic chemistry there to spice things up a bit. Definitely a fun and stylish episode, continuing the strong run of Burn Notice.
