It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia Airs Thursdays at 10/9c on FX
Episode: “Who Pooped the Bed?” (Season 4, Episode 7)
Synopsis: Someone has pooped in Frank and Charlie’s bed; Mac and Dennis investigate. Dee wishes to live a “Sex in the City” lifestyle with the Waitress and her drama buddy Artemus.
Review: An old fashioned whodunit on It’s Always Sunny that succeeds in letting me write the word “poop” on this website and still let it be relevant. I’ve always described this show as a live-action South Park, as opposed to an updated version of Seinfeld (which others have claimed), and with “Who Pooped the Bed?” I think I can rest my case. The way that all semblance for reality is thrown out the window is reminiscent of the Parker/Stone trademark. Bathroom humor is not funny; poop humor played with a straight face is hilarious. I said it in my last review– and I’ll say it again– McElhenney, Day, and Howerton are at the top of their game, both writing and acting. The three of them, thrown in with the ace of comedic timing DeVito are unstoppable. They’ll get a laugh doing anything. And now that the show is in its 4th season and they’re relatively comfortable with what their trying to achieve, they are just letting the jokes rip at an astounding rate.
Since bringing on Fred Savage (yes, that Fred Savage) as a regular director and producer, the episodes have taken a much darker, edgier, and unabashedly homo-erotic turn. Mac and Dennis, who always took a backseat to Charlie, Dee, and Frank as the characters who got all the biggest laughs, are seeing their time come as well. Dennis’ character is becoming more real episode by episode as we see he may be the most proudly inconsiderate human being on the planet. Before season 4, Dennis was an asshole. NOW, he’s a complete asshole, making him so much more fun to watch. However, most importantly, It’s Always Sunny is still absurdly funny and fresh–like a turd nestled in plastic Tupperware box.
