TV Review: Gossip Girl 2.12 – It’s a Wonderful Lie

Gossip Girl, The CW, Airs Monday 8/7c

Episode: “It’s a Wonderful Lie” (Season 2, Episode 12)

Synopsis: Vanessa and Nate come out of the closet, prompting Jenny to join in some Blair-esque revenge. Meanwhile Blair and Chuck make a bet to pair each other off with their perfect match, but only succeed in reminding themselves of how they aren’t together. Lily comes clean to Rufus over some affairs of the heart, but circumstances may force a sudden change of plans when she receives a horrifying phone call. Serena and Dan realise they’re still tied together, even with new partners and prospects on the scene.

Review: A step up from last week’s drab and dreary holiday, but this week’s episode still doesn’t reach the heights of classic Gossip Girl. The problem points which have developed over the first half of the season, Serena’s involvement with someone as dull as watching paint dry, the lack of a Serena and Dan reconciliation, not to mention Nate’s presence at all, all of these are in full force and the episode definitely suffers for them. Bring back the days of Blair’s reign as queen bitch as currently, her loyal subjects can’t even hold a candle to her wicked deeds. Vanessa should have been cowering in her boots after tangling with an Upper East side bitch, but instead was forced to endure the horror of… being in the spot light with her legs in silhouette. Haven’t most of the cast worn more revealing skirts over the course of the series?

As usual, it’s up to Chuck and Blair to rescue the episode and bring some life and entertainment back to the show. Their bet to see who could pick the best match for the other was bound to result in a doppelganger situation, but the sadness and the loss they felt at the sight of the clones pairing off whilst they languished alone was touching. Why can’t you let those crazy kids get together already?

Speaking of couples that should be but aren’t, the Dan and Serena pairing showed some signs of life this week, with a twist of jealousy and a dash of good old fashioned lingering looks across the room. Is this merely letting go of an ex, or a move to correct the mistake of breaking up to begin with? Knowing our luck, it’ll be option A), but until one of the pair is dead, the hope remains that the writers will come to their senses.

Up Next Week: “Oh Brother, Where Bart Thou” – A sudden tragedy strikes the lives of every teen and parent on the Upper East side.
