Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Trailer

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on October 4, 2007

Are you ready to behold one of the best trailers of the year? I figured you might be interested in that. Since it was announced that Johnny Depp would be starring in an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeny Todd directed by Tim Burton, I have been incredibly interested. But up until right now, this Christmas release has been shrouded in secrecy, with only a mere poster and a few production stills to wet our collective appetite for music, mayhem and murder.

With that said, I am proud to drop a little teaser trailer on you, as Yahoo Movies has gotten their hands on it before anyone else. It will run in front of the Ben Stiller comedy The Heartbreak Kid this weekend, and Paramount told us that it wouldn’t be online until Monday. Oh well, we are impatient when it comes to movies like this. Take a look for yourself below.

For my money, this is Depp’s most exciting role since he introduced the world to Captain Jack Sparrow back in 2003. It also reunites him with Tim Burton, completing a duo that has made some seriously creative flicks (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands). The trailer only scratches the surface of what could be to come, but it shows us enough of spooky Todd and his maniacal ways that it just may get a few people interested in this flick. It also, oddly enough, gives us a little peek into Johnny Depp’s singing in the film by way of a very creepy scene on the street. I have to say, if the rest of the film keeps going along these lines, I may have to reserve a spot in my yearly Top 10 list for a crazy barber and his meatpie making mistress.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street releases on December 21. It also stars Helena Bohnam Carter, Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen.

You can also catch the trailer in High Definition at Yahoo! Movies.

Man, this doesn't look good at all ... just the same pretty crap that Burton has been pumping out for year, with yet another variation of the "wacky" Depp character thrown in.

Time to grow up, guys ...

  • I am both excited and aroused at the prospect of this film.

    This looks so gay.

I already watched a Sweeney Todd movie and it was one of the best films I've ever seen. Fuck this shit.

    Singing?

This is gayer than Charlie in the Chocolate factory.

Angela Landsbury will always be the definitive Mrs. Lovette.

This could work... it was a fantastic musical on Broadway when I saw it some 25 years ago.
  • This looks like a gorgeous production of a brilliant musical, filled with terrific actors who AREN'T FUCKING SINGERS.

I have no doubt that Depp can act the part (though he's not who I'd have cast, just in terms of type). But while he can clearly carry a tune in a light, pop-rock tenor kind of way, the Sweeney role is written for a huge bass-baritone voice -- either a trained opera singer, or the type of Broadway singer who can slam you against the back wall of the theater without a microphone. This is to say nothing of the casting of Sacha Baron Cohen as Pirelli, a role written for nothing short of a full bravura operatic tenor, high c's and all (though the bulk of Pirelli's music could be cut without ruining the piece).

As a Sondheim fan, I've been waiting most of my life for a decent film version of one of his shows. While this is clearly going to be as stunning visually as any of Burton's films, and may in fact be an effective thriller, I just can't see how the music won't suffer. I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm not optimistic.

On the other hand, anything that introduces Sondheim's score to millions of people who would have otherwise never encountered it, much less sought it out, is a worthwhile endeavor.

    1) JJ? It's a movie of the STEVEN SONDHEIM OPERA. Of course there is singing. He is frick'n sondheim, and he's fantastic. you know, that guy who revolutionized broadway?

2)I think that Depp can carry the singing. After all it would be worked in studios, and if there were parts that weren't good, they could bring somone else in (which i don't have a problem with) let's remember that Depp's first ambition was to be a musician. I don't know what his range is like, but the little bit that we saw in the trailer i kind of like. It's not operatic, but i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. I think both kinds of singing can be amazing when done right.

yep... mostly i just wanted to say the first thing, "jj, your an idiot" because you are.

    Gay?
    Are you nuts...
This is one of the most powerful stories you'll ever see.
I have been a Sweeny=phile since I saw the first production over 20 years ago.
The music is incredible and, frankly, there's more pressure on Helena Bonham Carter than Johnny Depp to deliver.
This looks like the best Xmas present I've gotten in memory.

jesus, this looks so fucking fantastic i cant stop watching. its already my new favorite movie. johnny depp has just the right attitude for this, dark, brooding, slightly psychotic. maybe the singing wont be all his since the role does seem to call for a pretty deep voice, but who cares!? +look @ all the beautiful music+talented people involved. as far as i know theres only 1 other movie version, black+white, not even done as a musical, + therefore it was crap. comparing this to that is ridiculous. im so excited!!
  • I am so excited about this movie. Can't wait for it. I heard lots of people on a celebrity and millioniare dating site wealthymingle.com talking about it.

The few times Mr. Depp's sings in the trailer of "Sweeney Todd" one has the misfortune of hearing a very thin voice and an actor painfully speaking through what most certainly should be sung richly and fully.
Perhaps, Tim Burton and Mr. Depp should next team up and butcher Puccini's "Turandot" -
