It is generally hard to say what caught my eye about Claude Chabrol’s film A Girl Cut in Two. Perhaps it was the poster, seen above, which debuted over on Cinematical yesterday. There was just something about the notion of innocence lost, or about to be lost, in combination with the fact that Chabrol has directed a few solid, sexy films in the past. One in particular was La Femme infidèle in 1969, which was adapted in 2002 as Unfaithful, starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, one of the more alluring films of the past 10 years. For the record, that should be enough to get me interested in the man’s work — as well as the fact that I am, at times, an art house cinema dolt who needs a little culture. This is one of those times when I am glad to get some schooling abroad.

A Girl Cut in Two is a black comedy about a TV weather girl (Ludivine Sagnier, Paris, je t’aime) who becomes torn between a much older man (François Berléand, The Transporter) and a younger man (Benoît Magimel). Both men seek to control her, and as you can imagine, this leads to some deception and possibly some interesting consequences.

Personally, this is one import that I will be looking forward to as it makes the festival rounds throughout the rest of 2008 and hopefully onto DVD here in the states later in the year. For more, have a look at the film’s trailer below:
