Must-See Trailer: Will Ferrell in Semi-Pro

Semi-Pro is one of those movies that seems to have snuck in under the radar. It releases on February 29, 2008 and we are just now beginning to see some coverage for it. Today we get our first look at this basketball saga, starring Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, Will Arnett and Jackie Earl Haley, via a trailer that was debuted by Access Hollywood. Ferrell stars as Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder musician who took his riches and bought an ABA basketball team. Of course, as you will see from the trailer below, this one looks like another classic Will Ferrell character piece akin to Anchorman. I have to say, I am down.

Official Synopsis: Will Ferrell stars in Semi-Pro, an outrageous comedy set in 1976 against the backdrop of the maverick ABA – a fast-paced, wild and crazy basketball league that rivaled the NBA and made a name for itself with innovations like the three-point shot and slam dunk contest. Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, a one-hit wonder who used the profits from the success of his chart-topping song “Love Me Sexy” to achieve his dream of owning a basketball team. But Moon’s franchise, the Flint Michigan Tropics, is the worst team in the league and in danger of folding when the ABA announces its plans to merge with the NBA. If they want to survive, Jackie and the Tropics must now do the seemingly impossible – win.

are you serious? anchorman was the last good movie will ever did, but he wasn’t even a good character. i don’t know why he is the star of any movie. he’s better as a secondary character like night at the roxbury or wedding crashers. too much of will is a bad thing.

Ok. I *don’t like* Wil Farrel movies. But we got tickets to prescreen this, and I had to laugh in spite of myself. Give it a chance.

Will is who he is……I LOVE his movies because I can take the humor for what it is….Relax and let your brain get entertained…it doesn’t always have to be serious drama, thinking all the time…..Chill

Crap i forgot to comment about the preview. I agree, Will Farrell has been playing the same character for like 4 films now. It’s kinda losing is guster. Vince Vaughn is in the same boat. Seriously how long will they keep this up. I know, as long as people keep paying to see the same jokes. I like farrell in a couple of the Shorts he’s in but…. ahh who cares.

Read “Loose Balls” by Terry Pluto before watching that movie so that you’ll know how off-beat and outrageous the real ABA was.
Will Ferrel has tons of insight for turning the wildest league the world has ever seen into a movie. And every aspect of it: the players, the coaches and the owners.

I worked on this film. I think it’ll be pretty damn good. The supporting cast is very strong including a bunch of writer/comedians like Will Arnett and Andy Ricter. The budget on this was pretty good as well. They built the entire bleacher set for the home games which had audience crowds of 500 or more off and on for several weeks. They also shot some scenes in Flint Michigan where the Tropics ABA team is supposed to be located. All in all they put more work into the film than in some of his other recent projects.

I love Will Ferrell, if you can’t get a joke then your deffinately aren’t gonna get Will, he’s soo funny :] he also is very talented, I don’t think Anchor Man was his last good movies i also thought blades of glory, elf, kicking and screaming was pretty funny when they were at the butcher shop hahaha but yeah, i don’t think he plays the “same character” in every movie he is unique in every movie funny in his own way :]

seriously right, you all say “its getting old” or his characters the same, but
his jokes aren’t?
he has every right to lead a film for christs sake, the man is so so funny
that’s why he has so many damn fans and anchorman reached cult status-because of him alone!
everyone needs to loosed up, forget the plot and just take the film for what it is, a comedy!
yeah there will be bits you dont like, and what, im sure there’s bits people will love

The only time I laughed re: this movie is when the lights turned on, I turned to my friend laughing and said “This is the worse movie I have ever seen”
The worse movie I had ever seen had previously gone to “Tank Girl”
