I kid. The Ruins is in fact not related to last year’s abysmal Turistas. Yes, it’s about a group of hot, young, arrogant Americans vacationing south of the border. Sure, there are chicks in bikinis and maybe a boobie or two. Of course they end up dying one by one, each in a more grisly fashion than the last. But this time the villain isn’t some mad doctor pissed that his homeland was neglected from NAFTA. This time the villain is… are… plants! Presumably pissed off for some other reason… And that is not a spoiler by the way, the trailer throws that gem out halfway through.

If I don’t sound overly enthusiastic about this movie it’s for two reasons. One, the trailer looks cheap and lame. It’s about killer plants after all. Two, I read the book (written by Scott Smith, he of the far better A Simple Plan) and it was incredibly stupid, both in plot and character. It’s about killer plants after all.

The Ruins has possible dvd rental written all over it. And that’s only for the scenes where the turistas wig out over the vines burrowing beneath their skin and try to remove them by any means necessary. Those scenes were pretty brutal.

Plus there may be a boobie or two. Take a look at the trailer for yourself below.
