The 'Green Mile' for me should be up here. That is a brilliant movie and Michael Clarke Duncan's performance was absolutely mind-blowing.

The Oscars are rubbish, and I suspect that the Academy member don't always cast their votes on merit. I really don't see how a movie like the Green Mile can lose out to American Beauty, ok though it was.

I agree with Steven. Raging Bull is garbage. You always hear Raging Bull is considered this great movie. Well read the reviews and many critics also believe it was horrible. There are a few who pushed the "greatness" of this film due to its cinematography which I agree was exceptional. However as a whole the movie is still subpar at best

Pretty much agreed, except...

Annie Hall is better than Star Wars, but, granted, there's not much in it.
Schindler's List is better than Philadelphia... little more in it this time.
Gandhi is better than E.T. I'm sorry, but you're way off with that.

If Shawshank Redemption was a really good movie, which I'm sure it might be, it seams odd that Shawshank made penuts when it came out. Forrest Gump on the other hand was the bigest movie of the year.

I think the 68th Academy Awards were messed up pretty seriously. We had our "Best Picture" nominees (namely Braveheart, Il Postino, Sense and Sensibility, Apollo 13 and Babe), and those excluded from said award (namely Casino, The Usual Suspects, Toy Story, Nixon and Dead Man Walking). This, for me, is the first (but perhaps not last) occasion that ALL of those listed as excluded were better films than the five nominees.

And another fine example of the Academy's blind eye for film was the 41st ceremony. Now, how is it that Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey and Leone's epic Once Upon a Time in the West were more or less excluded form the awards altogether? Both are among the most influential of their genres, and far more deserving of the "Besr Picture" award than the Oscar-friendly Oliver!.
