Talking Points: New KITT v. Old KITT - You Decide!
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on December 13, 2007
Our friends over at ComingSoon.net reported yesterday that Arrested Development and SNL star Will Arnett will be taking on the voice behind the new KITT Ford Mustang in the upcoming NBC made-for-television Knight Rider sequel. The movie event, which will air on February 17 at 9 p.m. ET, will be a follow up to the iconic 1980s television show that starred David Hasselhoff and a Pontiac Trans-Am named KITT. The car was originally voiced by Boy Meets World’s William Daniels.
Of course, this news combined with the revealing of the fact that the updated KITT will be a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR got me thinking a little bit — we know that Will Arnett may not live up to the legacy of Mr. Feeny as the voice of KITT, but will the Mustang be as cool as the Trans-Am was back in the 80s. Ultimately it is up to you to decide which is better, but first let’s see the evidence.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR - The New KITT

Talking Point: Which do you prefer? The Old KITT or the New KITT, and why?

I like the Mustang on it’s own but not as KITT. It just looks like some young drug dealer’s pimped out Ford with off the shelf aftermarket bits.
Really bad call IMHO.

Aesthetically, I prefer the old KITT. For some reason a muscle car such as the Ford Mustang will do Knight Rider justice. Then again if you want to appeal to the younger generation I guess the ford mustang is an alright choice. I mean they could have done worse and changed a Honda Civic and called it KITT. :P

I say New kit, for 2 reasons, 1. New age movie needs a new age, BA car, not a car that was BA in the 80’s. 2. That freaking stang looks PIMP, Really looks like something McLovin would drive.

Bah. First off, it should be AWD. KITT was supposed to be technologically advanced, not something with too much horsepower that drives like a snowplow in the rain; I mean seriously, you can outmaneuver it with a stock GMC Syclone.
I can see it now: the bad guys rob a bank with AK’s that can’t get past the bulletproof glass that (should be) thick as a Humvee (transformers, they were “alien”), they panic, jump in their AWD pimped out ricer, go down one of those slick wet roads and you hear Carlos Revilla’s voice say “Sorry Michael, I can’t turn that fast… they have four-wheel drive. Let’s check out the TomTom and see the shortest route to where they might be and hope there’s a straight road with no cross-winds.
“After all, I’m only a Ford Mustang, after all.”

Old KITT. It looks mysterious, the new one is way to flashy IMO.

A Muskrat? Please. I agree with Screen Rant, it looks like a wannabe car. They could have at least used the GT if they were going to use a freakin Ford. Unless they plan on doing a lot of awesome stunts and need a disposable car like a Mustang, they should be using something much cooler. The new KITT looks like a block of iron. Weak move.

The original is much better.
You wouldn’t trade off Darth Vader for something that is new, would you? It wouldn’t be Darth Vader anymore.
The new car looks cool (except for the double spoiler imho) but let’s face it…it isn’t KITT.

This doesn’t even merit a debate.
The old one was an iconic sci-fi character, and the new one is nothing but product placement.
This is like replacing Han Solo with Colonel Sanders.
imho.

Ok.
Well, I like the old KITT. But according to these shows producers this is a CONTINUATION of the saga….
According to the posts on pages that I read the story goes….
The old KITT got TOTALLED…..I mean SMASHED TO SMITTHEREENS, Old KITT died! They hauled his body, solemnly, back to garage….Riderless Horse with backwards boot in the Stirrup kind of ceremony….
But of course, not before Kitt’s Brain was transferred, of course…ala Knight Rider 2000 when he got transferred to that RED PONTIAC. (which of course was WAY TOO FLASHY…but kitt didn’t seem to mind) BUT that was a “Future-Path” version of the saga…the road that was NOT TAKEN..due to events and decision taken by Michael, (or was it the writer’s strike of today, who knows?)
but anyway There’s KITT’s mangled, twisted, beat-up hulk on four broke rims and busted up console…(much like Enterprise-D in the end of ST:Gen’r, the one where Captain Kirk finally bit the dust not with a “Khaaaaaaaan!” but with an “Oh my…*” (awwww….))
Gentlemen, we can rebuild him…we have the TECHNOLOGY….we have the capability to build the WORLD’s SECOND BIONIC CAR….(cue SMDM music…) BETTER than he was before…BETTER, STRONGER, FORD TOUGHER, and FASTER!

of course, the story goes….
Kitt’s voice module got totalled too. So they had to build him a NEW voice box….sound’s like KARR (kitt’s evil twin, but hey….)

The new KITT looks too “super pursuit mode”-ish. When I was a kid that was ok. I loved the transformation bit. But these days I see that KITT looks way cooler pre-SPM than SPM.
Just judging from the pics they should total the new car and put everything back into the old KITT frame.
I will give them the benifit of the doubt though and wait till I see the movie before giving a final opinion.

i think the new kitt and michael won’t be as funny as david and william daniels when they used to make fun of each other.
