Channel Guide: Five Comic Book Characters That Would Make Great TV
Features By Merrill Barr on April 27, 2011 | Comments (12)With Smallville ending in a few weeks, Human Target (unfortunately) hanging on by a the skin of its teeth in ratings, The Incredible Hulk in pre-production and the Wonder Woman pilot now shot and awaiting word on series pickup possibilities, this is a great time to discuss what other comic book franchises would be well served by a live action TV adaptation. So without any ado at all, I offer five comic book franchises that would make great TV and the networks that would make the best match.
Boiling Point: This Entry Not Rated T for Teen
Boiling Point By Robert Fure on March 14, 2011 | Comments (5)PG-13 gets a lot of flack from us mature audiences sometimes – and with good reason. Often we complain that movies that deserve an R (Live Free or Die Hard) get knocked down to a PG-13 rating and lose the edge that can make them great. Todd Brown over at TwitchFilm recently made the point that PG-13 killed the movies it was meant to save – that is, youth adventure films. While I’m all for any chance to poke PG-13 into the eye any chance I get (and jam a thumb into the MPAA some place where they’d rate it R for violence), I don’t really follow that PG-13 killed youth adventure movies. But don’t worry. It’s still a bit of bullshit for other reasons.
Bullet Points: The Tao of Action Films
Bullet Points By Robert Fure on January 12, 2011 | Comments (3)At the end of 2010 we counted down the ten best action films of the year as an introduction to this column, the (almost) cleverly titled Bullet Points, our newest, most explosive column focusing on the action world. Beyond just reviewing action films, Bullet Points sets its sights on the genre as a whole- from stunts to guns, ass kickings to wire-fu and even just what the hell makes action films so great in the first place. In what is effectively our first official Bullet Points entry we wanted to get right to the ignition point of the explosion and discuss the ultimate principle of the action universe. That is, what makes a damn fine shoot ‘em up, beat ‘em up, blow ‘em up?
The Best Films of 2010: The Staff Picks
2010 Year in Review By Neil Miller on December 31, 2010 | Comments (15)As I expressed earlier in the week as our 2010 Year in Review began, I take it as a great honor that I am able to put together my list of the Best Films of the Year as part of my Editor’s Picks entry. And while I’m a massive fan of my own perspective and opinions, I’m an even bigger fan of the writing and ever-diverse tastes of the Film School Rejects reviewing staff. These are the folks who, through their sensational (and often divisive) review-writing, keep you coming back for more each and every day. They travel the world and brave the crowds at festivals, conventions, preview screenings and special events to bring you some of the industry’s sharpest, most honest film coverage. And I for one am honored to have them all on this team. Just as I did last year, I couldn’t wait to see which films each writer would put on their Top 5 lists as the best films of the year. And just as they did last year, they didn’t disappoint with their unique, ever-fascinating selections. So read on dear reader, as we present the crown jewel of our 2010 Year in Review: The Staff Picks.
Year in Review: The 10 Best Action Films of 2010
2010 Year in Review By Robert Fure on December 29, 2010 | Comments (12)In many ways, the end of the year is just like every other part of the year: we want to make lists. So we come up with lots of list ideas. One idea this year, like almost every year, is a list of the best action films. But this year, 2010, is special. This article is special. Why? Because this Year in Review article is going to kick off a brand new column that you’ll be able to rock and roll with every Wednesday in 2011: Bullet Points. Like The Coroner’s Report, Bullet Points will focus on a particular genre. I’m not talking down to you when I say that it’s action films, though you probably guessed that pretty quickly. To kick off this column right and make 2010 just explode all over itself, we’re counting down our ten favorite action films.
Join us each week as Rob Hunter takes a look at new DVD releases and gives his highly unqualified opinion as to which titles are worth BUYing, which are better off as RENTals, and which should be AVOIDed at all costs. And remember, these listings and category placements are meant as informational conversation starters only. But you can still tell Hunter how wrong he is in the comment section below. Several of this week’s new titles seem to be coming in pairs including… Bong Joon-ho’s first film as well as his latest, a pair of Roger Corman’s Cult Classics, the BBC’s Being Human and Look Around You, A Couple of Dicks from Kevin Smith, and more. See all of this week’s relevant DVD releases after the jump…
This Week in Blu-ray: Bring On the Underwhelm-a-Thon
Features By Neil Miller on July 20, 2010 | Comments (3)It’s a slim selection in this fine edition of This Week in Blu-ray. This past weekend I sat down to review this week’s list of Blu-ray titles only to find a pair of running themes. One, I received review copies of less than half of this week’s total releases, making it very difficult to make recommendations (Dear Studios, please bite me). And two, that this week is a marathon of 2010′s great disappointments. Everything from the year’s first (of 27) “team of soldiers on a mission” movie to that Kevin Smith movie that dare not speak its name is on my list of underwhelms for the year. It was a mildly depressing weekend for me, but only because I was drinking heavily and reviewing, which is not recommended. The good news is that a few of these releases pulled themselves from the gutter with quality extras and a surprising level of rewatchability. Which is why we’re starting this week’s column in the Rent section, rather than the Avoid section.
Box Office: Only Dragons Are Not Losers This Weekend
Box Office By Neil Miller on April 26, 2010 | Be the First To CommentAs predicted, it was a rather abysmal weekend at the box office. After being edged out slightly last weekend by newcomer Kick-Ass, the Dreamworks Animation pic How to Train Your Dragon returned to the top of the charts with a vengeance this weekend, slicing up both The Losers and the J-Lo led rom-com The Back-Up Plan.
Reject Radio: Episode 44 – The Hurricane Volcano
Movie News By Cole Abaius on April 25, 2010 | Comments (1)This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, we discuss The Snatch Test, refuse to comment on Mickey Rourke’s bathroom parts, and tell you how to save money while Hollywood raises ticket prices and double-dips.
While summer generally doesn’t kick-off until May, The Losers didn’t get that memo and packed the boat full of guns, explosions, and slow-motion booty shots to give us an action filled intro to the warmer months.
Kevin Carr’s Weekly Report Card: April 23, 2010
Features By Kevin Carr on April 23, 2010 | Comments (1)This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr dives into Oceans, becomes one of The Losers and fomulates a Back-Up Plan
Fat Guys at the Movies Ep. 161 – The Back-Up Fat
Features By Kevin Carr on April 23, 2010 | Be the First To CommentKevin and Neil connect in the Magical Studio in the Sky after a long week of movie-watching. Like the wusses at Comedy Central, the Fat Guys refuse to show a depiction of the Prophet Muhammed. So there.
The Reject Report: Everyone’s a Loser at the Box Office This Week
Box Office By Neil Miller on April 23, 2010 | Comments (3)It’s another beautiful and sunny week here at The Reject Report. Alright, that’s a lie. It’s rather depressing. John Cairns is no longer writing this column, and it looks to be a drab week for Hollywood’s bean counters…
8 Comic Books That Should Be Movies
Cinematic Listology By FSR Staff on April 22, 2010 | Comments (22)The fact that the phrase “militarized version of Homeward Bound appears in this feature should be enough to make you read it.
Interview: Sylvain White Challenges Us to a ‘Losers’ Dance Battle
Features By Cole Abaius on April 22, 2010 | Be the First To CommentI was fortunate enough to sit down with the director on the day he locked picture on the film to talk about dance battles, getting lost in the jungle, and one of the best Birthday gifts he’s ever gotten – the chance to shoot a project he’s loved since he was a kid.
The Losers is the closest thing to Tango & Cash to hit theaters in decades. Is that a good thing? Or is it fubar?
In The Losers, Captain America Has Trouble Picking Up Chicks
Movie News By Neil Miller on April 21, 2010 | Be the First To CommentFar be it from to speculate about the absurdity of a plotline in an action movie based on an absurdly stylish comic book, but I find it hard to believe that Chris Evans — who will soon suit up as the titular character in Captain America — has so much trouble conversing with women…
Jeffrey Dean Morgan: A Man of Action with a Heart of Gold
Features By Robert Fure on April 21, 2010 | Be the First To CommentWe sit down for jokes with The Comedian and tales of gun play with Clay, or as his momma calls him — Jeffrey Dean Morgan, to talk about his latest film The Losers and his upcoming roles in Red Dawn, as well as the Jonah Hex role that never was.
Sylvain White Surrenders Details About Frank Miller’s Ronin
Movie News By Jack Giroux on April 20, 2010 | Comments (2)When we’ll see Frank Miller’s Ronin finally come to the big screen is still a question that’s unanswered. Thankfully, this weekend may give us some insight into the answer of that burning question. Director Sylvain White has been attached to Ronin for quite sometime now and if his (very fun) new film The Losers opens as good as it should this weekend, perhaps we wont have to wait too much longer for his take on Miller’s samurai epic.
Idris Elba Spins a Knife In Our Face And Talks ‘The Losers’
Features By Robert Fure on April 20, 2010 | Comments (1)Our resident tough guy (it’s not hard to be tough in this crowd) sits down with The Losers’ tough guy Idris Elba and is immediately reminded that he is not 6’3″.
