The Expendables

Directed by: Sylvester Stallone

Synopsis: The only life they’ve known is war. The only loyalty they have is to each other.

They are the Expendables: leader and mastermind Barney Ross (Stallone), former SAS blade expert Lee Christmas (Statham), hand-to-hand combat specialist Yin Yang (Li), long barrel weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Crews), demolitions expert Toll Road (Couture), and precision sniper Gunnar Jensen (Lundgren).  Living life in the fringes of the law, these hardened mercenaries take on what appears to be a routine assignment: a covert, CIA-funded operation to infiltrate the South American country of Vilena and overthrow its ruthless dictator General Garza (David Zayas).  But when their job is revealed to be a suicide mission, the men are faced with a deadly choice, one that might redeem their souls…or destroy their brotherhood forever.

Release Date: August 13, 2010

Boiling Point

I haven’t seen The Expendables yet. Most of us haven’t. I’m pretty sure you haven’t. But we’re all pretty excited for it. All of our favorite 80s action stars in one place. Some great cameos. A fun premise. Plenty of excitement and hype. A great advertising campaign. Even those of us who are weary of being burned by it are quietly cheering it on. Is there a movie that, based on premise alone, has ever seemed this cool? Yes. And it was called Snakes on a Plane. If you believed the internet hype and bought into the circus surrounding it, Snakes was going to make $75 million its opening weekend. What it ended up doing was making under $14 million and barely edging out the pile of sh*t Talladega Nights by only a few thousand dollars – a terrible movie already in its third week of release. So, if you’re excited about The Expendables put your money where your fat mouth is and go see it this weekend.

Comic-Con 2010

Last weekend was the crucible of Comic-Con, and no fewer than one billion trillion news stories came out of the convention aimed directly at your sensibilities as an audience member. We weren’t the only site on the block that had coverage of course, and hopefully you read more than a few of our peers (because there really are some great sites out there). You were most likely inundated with new information about the movies hitting theaters soon or in the next year. Did any of it change your mind? Was there a movie you were dying to see that you cooled on? Was there a movie that landed on your radar for the first time? Is your confidence renewed in anything?

The Expendables

In the best piece of film marketing of the year so far, The Expendables have decided to pull out all the pretense. In its place, they’ve aimed a .50 caliber M2 at your testicles and lightly squeezed the trigger. Obviously, this advertisement is only aimed at the movie-goers of the male persuasion. There’s no need for fluffy words to get in the way here. You just have to watch the damned trailer for yourself.

Lionsgate has released a new 60-second trailer for Sly Stallone’s The Expendables. And despite its brief runtime, it may be the best trailer they’ve released for the name-heavy actioner yet. It accurately captures the promised tone of the film, one filled with bullets and bravado. A mountain of machismo. Oh, and they’ve improved their choice of music a bit — I can’t stand that metal song they used in the first full trailer.

As many a writer for Ain’t It Cool News likes to point out, Sylvester Stallone likes to call them on weekends and remind them that The Expendables is “crazy hard-R.” But while that may be true for the moment, we’re getting some interesting news this week that indicates potential studio pressure to take the Stallone, Statham, Li, and everyone else with a reputation actioner down a notch for a PG-13 rating.

Sorry. No. It’s not an On Demand channel featuring all of John McClane’s greatest hits and quips from over the years. That would, indeed, be a thing of beauty. I personally would have the terrorist getting sliced in half by a tow cable near the end of Die Hard With a Vengeance on loop. No, Die Hard 24/7 is the rumored title for the new film, the fifth installment in a franchise that began with what some believe to be the greatest action film of all time.
