We’ve all heard the grumblings and complaints over the prospect of a new remake of Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Carrie. What’s to care about with this remake? We’ve already got a pretty perfect adaptation. But now some of us can care, with the news that Kimberly Peirce could possibly be at the helm. Peirce is both an odd and kind of perfect choice for this project. Her acclaimed Boys Don’t Cry and lesser acclaimed but still pretty good Stop-Loss are both what one could call psychological horror movies, and Carrie very much is that. Peirce seems adept crafting films that chronicle young people going through a tough time, so she makes for an oddly suitable fit, really. MGM and Screen Gems are supposedly interested in a “gritty” take, despite the story involving a girl using psychic powers. Peirce, clearly being a lover of making all things gritty and realistic, could probably give them the realism they (oddly) want. Deadline Hermon is currently reporting she’s “in talks” to direct, and I certainly hope that deal goes through.

Instead of doing a cheesy list for Veteran’s Day, we here at FSR decided just to give a run down of all the war-type movies that we’ve covered over the years (the good, the bad, and the boots on the ground).

Although the picture is occasionally compelling and has hints of honesty, the script by Pierce and co-writer Mark Richard is a one-way ticket to nowhere.

Well, it seems Americans may have some taste in movies after all. Superhero Movie, well, was not so super after all. The winning movie this weekend was the gambling pic 21, beating out Horton Hears a Who! and Superhero Movie.

I am getting so tired of these movies about the war in Iraq. But Hollywood isn’t. And they are doing exactly what they’re accusing George W. Bush of doing – not listening to the American people. But like John Stewart pointed out at the Oscars, it’s Hollywood’s job to stay the course and keep making these movies. [Grade: C-]

On This Week’s Show: We get Stop-lossed by a few bad movies, including one that was made under the MTV Films label (Stop-Loss) and another that might as well have been (21). We also take on the wonder that is Simon Pegg in his latest film, Run Fatboy Run, a concept that speaks directly to us — we just aren’t listening. We also run through our April Movie Preview, giving you a good list of the films you should be marking on your calendar — as well, we expose Kevin’s undying love for UFC fighters in bikini bottoms. Oh, and there is another stupid parody movie coming out — we take a moment to explain the pile of suck that is Superhero Movie.

When director Kimberly Peirce took the stage, she called Stop Loss a tribute to the troops. Considering her own brother is a soldier in Iraq, why would she make them all look like incompetent, drunk messes of human beings?

We’ve already rolled through Universal and Walt Disney, so now it’s time to talk about Paramount Pictures’ lineup for 2008.

It’s not every day that you get to have a conversation with a real filmmaker. And no, your loser brother who got rejected from film school (and now writes for a semi-reputable website about movies) doesn’t count.
