This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr follows Jamie Chung to Thailand, hoping to get married. Unfortunately, someone slips him roofies, which made him black out and spend a drunken night in Bangkok. Once he got out of that city, he headed over to China to become the new pot-bellied dragon warrior. After all, if a cartoon panda can do it, why can’t he? That didn’t stop him from spending another night in the hospital, and maybe a little time in a Bangkok jail. And then the real horror happened… Kevin saw The Tree of Life.

If there’s one family movie franchise I wouldn’t mind seeing more of it’s the epic tale of Po the Kung Fu Panda and his merry band of fighting creature friends, the Furious Five. This sequel to the 2008 hit resurrects and expands upon the original’s blend of creatively filmed action, appealingly broad comedy and classic Chinese motifs interspersed with that age-old animation standard: cute animals. This time, Po the Dragon Warrior (Jack Black) and his team are called upon to protect China from Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), a peacock with a devious plan to right a past wrong and heavy machinery to back it up. The kung fu masters must face immense obstacles, not the least of which is Po’s sudden, shocking realization that his noodle-shop owning goose father (James Hong) isn’t his biological paterfamilias.

There’s an old hobby that most everyone shares of creating dream teams. Maybe it’s figuring out the best possible basketball players to toss onto one roster (which dominates the Olympics in the 90s), maybe it’s thinking up physics-defying, time-travel-based bands which see Robert Plant playing with Buddy Rich and Townes Van Zandt, maybe it’s seeing some of the best in the comedy business come together to merge styles and create a movie. Paul is what it’s like when worlds collide. The dry, awkward humor of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost coming together under satire and humanistic comedy of director Greg Mottola with a healthy blend of Kristen Wiig, Seth Rogen, and Jason Batemen in tow. The results don’t explode into orbit, but the movie is as enjoyable as any other standard road trip comedy out there.

Paramount has greenlit the film, titled My Mother’s Curse, and it is expected to begin shooting in the spring. The story centers around a cross-country trip shared between an inventor (Seth Rogen) and his mother (Barbara Streisand). He is on the trip to hock his wares and she has tagged along to try and reunite with a lost love. The film has been in the works for quite some time, and has just finally gotten the green light. So I guess the question is, what about this project makes it worth so much effort to get it together?  So far there is no news of roles for a lifetime best friend or a way out of his league love interest for Rogen. Could he be making a play to step out of his comfort zone? And Streisand hasn’t acted in a non-Fockers film since 1996, what is her motivation for signing on to such an absurd sounding project?

The Green Hornet hasn’t been treated all too kindly on the interwebs for a while now. Ever since the announcement of Seth Rogen starring in the film, overly sensitive message board regulars have been crying foul. There’s been less-than-flattering rumors regarding the film, most of which were untrue, but what does writer Evan Goldberg think of this? Well, he doesn’t spend a whole lot of time online, but he recognizes and knows the unfair buzz. Goldberg even name dropped an IMDB message board regular who he spent a lot of time antagonizing. Now that the film is out, perhaps those skeptics will give the film a fair shake. The one thing about The Green Hornet that most will take notice to is how much Goldberg and Rogen did the opposite of standard superhero tropes. The lead, Britt Reid, isn’t your usual superhero and is a completely dislikable moron. The love interest isn’t even a love interest. The villain is more sympathetic than the idiotic hero. Britt Reid makes Tony Stark seem like a total boy scout in comparison. Rogen and Goldberg, without a doubt, have created one of the most unconventional and (lovably) unlikable superhero leads ever to grace the screen.

This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr dresses up in a trench coat and hat, wears a mask and runs around the streets of his fair city with his strong and agile Asian manservant. The plan: When arrested, tell the police he is trying to emulate the crime-fighting career of the Green Hornet. If he can get away with that, he plans on tracking down two doughy but funny guys who are having sexual relations with super-hot Hollywood type ladies and try to steal their girlfriends away. Or, he just might sit on the couch and watch movies after telling you what he thinks of The Green Hornet and The Dilemma.

Depending on what image just popped into your fragile mind, this might exactly what you thinking or the exact opposite. But probably nothing in between. If you imagined, “a Rated-R, super dirty, mockery of a Pixar movie about sausages in a supermarket that need to get back to their aisle before the fourth of July,” then you were right, because that’s how screenwriter Evan Goldberg described the project (one of many) that he and Seth Rogen are currently working on. Goldberg spoke to ScreenRant recently about The Green Hornet, not seeing The Godfather III, his hesitation about making Pineapple Express 2, and about the possibilities of seeing their hockey movie The Goon and movie about Jay and Seth battling against the Apocalypse (Jay and Seth vs The Apocalypse) ending up as actual words on paper. However, the project that caught my attention the most was the animated potential of seeing a bunch of filthy sausages go on an adventure in the dairy aisle. Sounds great, right?

The thing about broccoli is that it’s disgusting at first. When you’re a child, your young taste buds only want sugar and chocolate and that meatloaf that only your mom can make. Often you want all of these things at the same time. But as you get older, your taste matures and you suddenly find yourself with dozens of recipes that make broccoli a completely worthwhile vegetable that’s welcome on any plate. Hell, sometimes it even surprises you – blowing your taste buds away in a flavor explosion. The Green Hornet is cinematic broccoli.

If you were twiddling your thumbs, getting all down heart by reading the marquee at your local theater, and wondering when the hell you’ll be able to feast your eyes on the theoretical comic genius of Pineapple Express 2 – be prepared to be disappointed. There are two things standing in the way. One is the reality of schedules. Now that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Franco, and Danny McBride are getting phone calls every 10 seconds for new work, it makes it difficult to get the gang back together. Still, if Danny Ocean can bring a baker’s dozen together, these comedians can most likely make the time. The second thing is Evan Goldberg. The co-writer of Pineapple Express is incredibly hesitant to go down the sequel road because of the damage it could do if it failed. That damage most likely translates to their career prospects and to the memory of the characters, but it’s not a bad point. Some movies just aren’t made for sequels, and it’s nice to see a filmmaker giving some intense thought to it instead of jumping in blindly. On that same note, though, Goldberg should definitely take his time, and then decide to make the sequel. It would have fun characters on another wacky adventure, and there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, it might be a better version of a Three Stooges movie than the actual planned Three Stooges movie. [Cinema Blend]

Paul is an alien from outer space who likes to moon people, use his invisibility powers to show up randomly naked, and laugh just like Seth Rogen. There’s a new trailer for the film out today, and even though it says nothing about the exact quest the alien and his new spaced-out friends (played by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) are going on, it’s still a shiny example of some solid comedy. Plus, there’s at least three major science fiction film references just in the trailer alone.

If this were a tabloid, the headline above would refer to a strange sex tape involving comedian Sarah Silverman and Christoph Waltz. However, being just slightly better than a tabloid, it refers to Silverman’s revelation that she’s done a nude scene for noted actor/director Sarah Polley (Away From Her). The scene is for Take This Waltz, a dramedy that also features Michelle Williams and Seth Rogen in lead roles. We reported on the odd acting pairing back in January, and it looks like they’ll be joined on screen by full frontal Silverman, a reality that Silverman claims, “is going to be awful. It’s so not pretty.” Silverman is known more for stand-up and for her television show, although she’s appeared in films like School of Rock. Still, it brings yet another strange dimension to an already interesting-sounding project. [Moviefone]

For those among you who are cool, you will remember the best days of Seth Rogen were his short-lived days spent among the cast of Freaks & Geeks. Sure, he’s grown up and gone on to do bigger things, but there was something so honest about those performances. They were untainted by all of the baggage that now accompanies Rogen from project to project. That said, Rogen is getting back into the school yard vibe with DreamWorks Animation’s Boo U. The story follows a ghost who must return to “ghost school” in an attempt to become a better spook. If director Anthony Leondis (Igor) plays it right, the reason the main character will need remedial work will have something to do with his silly, almost non-stop chuckle. It’s a perfect fit for Rogen, as anyone whose ever been to one of his Comic-Con panels can tell you. It all sounds very Casper the Friendly Ghost meets Monsters Inc. I say that despite the knowledge that by comparing a Dreamworks project to a Pixar movie will earn me some guff in the comments section. That’s okay, I’ll just imagine all of the comments coming complete with that Seth Rogen chuckle. [Heat Vision]

The Green Hornet isn’t getting the buzz it deserves. It’s a Michel Gondry superhero film – how does that not draw excitement? Or how about the fact it’s written by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen? They both share writing credits for Pineapple Express and Superbad which are, arguably, the best Apatow produced features. It’s an odd combination for sure, but at least it sounds and looks different than most superhero films currently in the pipeline. While the first trailer wasn’t the show stopper it should have been, it shouldn’t tamper one’s excitement. The one thing I really wanted to know, though: how much of a Michel Gondry film will this be? That’s one of the many things I asked Golberg when I sat down with him last week at Comic-Con.

Boiling Point

In honor of Hung’s usage of two titles per episode, this week’s Boiling Point is actually called In Defense of the Nerd Kingdom or How Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg Wrote the Weakest, Most Uninspired Comic Con Article of All Time. You can see how the the second title is a bit long. You may also be asking yourself “what exactly is this moron talking about?” Well, when the San Diego Comic Convention rolls around, the biggest of its kind, you can always count on a few articles or arguments against it. They’re generally playful, but my problem is that they’re vastly unoriginal and mostly unwarranted. No doubt you’ve already read some article that says something along the lines of “Nerds smell and need deodorant.” Usually its said like “Memo: Nerds, put down your dice and figure out the magic spell of deodorant.” Actually, that’s too clever, but you get the point.

Green Hornet

There’s a title I didn’t think I would ever write. But it’s true — the new trailer for The Green Hornet is upon us, and Seth Rogen actually appears to kick some ass. A resident stoner funnyman, Rogen was an interesting choice for the film’s hero, but once again he and writing partner Evan Goldberg appear to have delivered something fun. And unexpectedly, there also appears to be some wicked action in it.

According to a Summit Entertainment press release, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has replaced James McAvoy as the lead in the untitled dramedy formally known as I’m With Cancer.
