Official images have all been released, the trailers have been scrutinized, screenings of the completed film have been shown, and it’s getting to be about the end of the pre-release publicity party for Mathew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class. Luckily for all of us Vaughn recently sat down for a chat with Hitfix’s Drew McWeeny and let a couple of juicy nuggets slip about possible plans for a First Class sequel. In a stunning development that has me thinking Vin Diesel would be the perfect choice for a For Love or Money remake, the actor has taken to his Facebook page to present his fans with a conundrum he’s facing when trying to get another Pitch Black sequel off the ground. I’ll let him tell it in his own words: “D T the writer/director just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch… in order for us to make a true R rated film, I must work for scale upfront. Not unlike the Find Me Guilty experience (which I wouldn’t have changed for the world).” I have to assume that the D T he is speaking of is Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick director David Twohy, and it sounds like the rest of the post is Diesel saying he wouldn’t want to do another Riddick sequel unless it was R-rated, and he’s willing to take a pay cut to make that happen. With as much of a success as J.J. Abrams’s relaunch of the Star Trek franchise was, both financially and critically, there has naturally been a lot of talk about what’s going on with the sequel. The biggest head-scratcher about the whole situation is that word keeps coming out that the script isn’t even finished yet. How can a film that has the potential to be this huge not even have a script together at this point? Shouldn’t we be knee deep in the production process already? I mean, it’s been two years since his first Star Trek film, and this is Hollywood. What gives? Thankfully, co-writer/producer Roberto Orci has popped over to the Trek Movie forums and cleared up some of the speculation as to what’s going on with the project. He assures that they’ve, “Just been waiting for JJ to be free to really decide if he likes the story and hear his suggestions before we finish the script. Once he says go, we’ll have it in no time. The sequel to Zack Snyder’s super successful swords and sandals epic 300 used to look like a much more straightforward proposition than it does now. Frank Miller was writing a graphic novel sequel, Zack Snyder would once again adapt it into a feature film, and it was going to be named Xerxes. Lately all that doesn’t seem to be so set in stone. Since Zack Snyder signed on the make the next Superman, the question of who is going to direct has been up in the air. Sitting down to talk with MTV, producer Mark Canton has cleared up a few things about where the project is, and stayed a bit more vague about where the project is headed. The big news is that he says the film will no longer be called Xerxes. He said that the story is more of a “Xerxes Plus.” I suppose this hints that the film will be taking a more epic scope than being just a bio of the Xerxes character, but it also means that someone is still working on the development of and thinking about this project, despite the fact that Snyder has been shunted off to Superman. While Canton doesn’t have a new title to give us, he does seem to think that the story is in place. He says, “It’s been worth the wait. You know, that group of people, we’re really a family. MTV cameras were at the recent Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared cast reunion, and they managed to corner actor Jay Baruchel and grill him about the sequel to his Oscar nominated animated film How to Train Your Dragon. When asked if he knew anything about the movie yet, Baruchel showed enthusiasm for the project by practically bragging to the reporter, “Yes I do. I know everything about it. I read it last week!” Oh you cocky Jay Baruchel, with your smug five o clock shadow. Someday you’ll get put in your place! Baruchel went on to explain, “It’s phenomenal. And it’s not a sequel; it’s a chapter two. Because there are eight books, so it’s not just finding crazy situations to put our characters in. It’s very much a second act of a three act thing.”

Over the past 24 hours my Twitter feed has been abuzz with reactions to the announcement that Alcon Entertainment was close to signing a deal to make more Blade Runner movies. Capitalizing on the wave on controversy, i09 sat down with Alcon executives Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, and Bud Yorkin to ask them more about their plans for turning this cult classic into a modern franchise. When asked why they wanted to go after the rights to Blade Runner Johnson said, “We’re intellectually fascinated and ready to explore the themes that the movie invokes and the underlying material. At the end of the day those are the things that make great movies. Those and characters, it’s an opportunity of a life time to try and explore this further.” Kosove added, “I think that there’s a unique aspect of Blade Runner, and it is absolutely right to be re-address now at this time in human history. That is the concept of what it means to be a human being. What does it mean to be human, to have empathy, to have feelings?”

Liam Neeson is soon to star in the film Unknown, which opens February 18th here in the US. But before he was able to so confidently open an action film filled with espionage and intrigue such as this one, he was first slotted into the starring role of the 2008 film Taken. In that picture he assured us that he was a man with a “very specific set of skills” which ended up mostly consisting of hunting people down and killing them in horrifically satisfying ways. It wasn’t a movie that should have made much of an impact at the box office, and it didn’t resemble anything that had real franchise potential; but there was something about the film that really resonated with audiences. When Neeson said that he had a specific set of skills in that trailer, people believed him. They believed him so much that they showed up to see him exhibit those skills in droves. And despite his advancing age, Neeson was able to convincingly kill a bunch of people without any of it looking unlikely or exploitational. Despite all rational to the contrary, Liam Neeson had become a modern day action hero with just one role, even though he was already a hundred years old. With a dominant weekend opening knocking girly films all over the place with its testosterone fueled hyper-aggression, there are about 35 million reasons why The Expendables will get a sequel. Stallone is already said to be plotting out the story and, if rumor is to be believed, has talked to more than one actor about joining the team on their next adventure. While we trust Sly (with everything but CGI) to cast a fantastic team, once our peanut brains get rolling we can’t stop. Personally I’ve been thinking non-stop about who I’d like to see join the team – or fight against them – in the next installment. Enough bull, let’s talk team! The current poster for the team included nine action stars, at least one of whom probably isn’t returning. So we figured that means we have to come up with at least 10 new members, and possibly a villain. Because we’re ridiculous.

It may be hard for some of us Americans to believe, but our friends across the pond in England are just now getting to see the wonderment that is Black Dynamite. It’s been available on DVD and Blu-ray here in the states for months and we’ve all watched it several times, laughing our asses off the whole way. Finally our tea drinking brothers get to feel the same. While making the press rounds in support of the Black Dynamite release abroad, Michael Jai White revealed to The Mirror that he’s already working on a sequel. White told the press that there were a lot of things they wanted to squeeze into the first film, but just didn’t have the time for. The idea for a sequel has been gestating in his brain for awhile now and he plans to have the film pick up right where the first left off.

With a heavy hit at the box office, we might be seeing a glove full of knives coming at us in 3D soon.

When J.J. Abrams stepped onto the red carpet at this year’s Saturn Awards, he had to know that Star Trek questions were coming. Luckily, he has all the answers about a possible sequel.

Forgive me for not being my normal enthusiastic self in delivering the news. Excuse my complete and utter apathy at this tidbit. See, Ghost Rider was so utterly terrible that I can’t even muster any anger over this. Just pure, soul-crushing disgust.

So many questions. So we’ll have to make up answers.
