Movie News After Dark: The Comic-Con Hangover, Breaking Bad Style and Cowboys and Aliens Remixed
Movie News By Neil Miller on July 25, 2011 | Comments (3)What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that just got back from a little vacation. No, it didn’t go to Comic-Con in San Diego. It feels it necessary to leave stuff like that to the professionals, namely Misters Abaius, Fure and Giroux. They did a wonderful job, did they not? And rumor is that they’re not done yet. That said, it shouldn’t come to you as a surprise if tonight’s entry is a little Con-tilted, or nerd-obsessed. It is part of the Comic-Con hangover treatment, after all. The above image, tweeted out by Community creator Dan Harmon, shows a sign erected at the studio where the show has begun shooting its third season celebrating the show’s zero Emmy nominations. “I want to win an Emmy for this show,” said Harmon as he and cast led a rousing panel during Comic-Con. They’ll get one. If not, we’ll make one and send it to them.
Comic-Con 2010: 10 Things I Liked, 5 I Didn’t
Comic-Con 2011 By Robert Fure on July 28, 2010 | Comments (10)The San Diego Comic-Con is a strange thing. Leading up to it there’s anticipation, fear, excitement. Many of these emotions survive the first few days and you might even add a few: joy, rage, disappointment, wonderment. By the time you’re ready to leave, your body is aching and all you want to do is punch Jack Giroux in the face and sleep for 14 hours on the biggest, softest bed you can find. This year was no different. Going into Comic-Con there were certain things I was looking forward to – some of them hit the spot, others fell flat, one or two didn’t even end up being there. While I would classify the trip as a success that isn’t to say that each day didn’t bring a fair share of rage with it. So, I’ll cut to the chase and reveal the 10 Things I Liked about SDCC 2010, and 5 Things that left me cold.
Boiling Point: Put the Comic Back in Comic-Con
Boiling Point By Robert Fure on July 26, 2010 | Comments (9)With the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con having closed its doors, of course I’m going to have to write it about it for Boiling Point. Now, I’m a fan of Comic Con and don’t want to take a few of the obvious roads, especially ones that don’t apply to everyone. Many of us in the press industry had rough times getting into many panels, though how interesting is that to the readers? Not very, I’d reckon. I’ve also already talked about how we shouldn’t make fun of Con goers because not only do most of them smell just fine but for most of my life I was a fan and not a writer. There are plenty of complaints about Comic Con (we’ll focus on the positives later), but for me, ignoring press/job related issues, the one thing I don’t like about SDCC is the kind of non-comic related bull that gets shipped down there every year.
Boiling Point: In Defense of the Nerd Kingdom
Boiling Point By Robert Fure on July 19, 2010 | Comments (4)In honor of Hung’s usage of two titles per episode, this week’s Boiling Point is actually called In Defense of the Nerd Kingdom or How Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg Wrote the Weakest, Most Uninspired Comic Con Article of All Time. You can see how the the second title is a bit long. You may also be asking yourself “what exactly is this moron talking about?” Well, when the San Diego Comic Convention rolls around, the biggest of its kind, you can always count on a few articles or arguments against it. They’re generally playful, but my problem is that they’re vastly unoriginal and mostly unwarranted. No doubt you’ve already read some article that says something along the lines of “Nerds smell and need deodorant.” Usually its said like “Memo: Nerds, put down your dice and figure out the magic spell of deodorant.” Actually, that’s too clever, but you get the point.
Robert Fure decides whether to Give Malone Hell or some sweet loving after catching the first ever screening of Give ‘Em Hell Malone at SDCC 09.
