Watch: The First Political Ad in Movie Form Pits Woodrow Wilson Against Howard Taft 100 Years Ago
Features By Scott Beggs on August 28, 2012 | Be the First To CommentWhy Watch? Televised political ads were something of a revolution in their time and a necessary evil today, but decades before TV swept the nation, political ads were often made as short films. The first known motion picture political ad came during the heated 1912 election fight between Woodrow Wilson and Howard Taft. Wilson was the challenger who came from a divided Democratic Party (he didn’t earn the nomination until the 46th ballot of the convention) promising smaller government and to fight monopolies. Here, in The Old Way and the New, the theme of the story is that Taft – shown as a literal fat cat – is a slave of the interests while Wilson is a servant of the little man. What will it cost you? Only 8 minutes. Skip work. Watch more short films.
Sarah Palin Can See the Big Screen From Her House
Movie News By Scott Beggs on May 25, 2011 | Comments (11)She may have never actually said that she could see Russia from her house (that’s the power of Palin parody), but the former Governor of Alaska will have plenty of chances to deliver new quotables when The Undefeated hits screens. In what must be either a self-mockingly ironic (considering it focuses on someone who’s literally been defeated before) or a metaphorical title, Sarah Palin will be seen rising through the political ranks, earning her spot as Governor of Alaska, and securing a place on the 2008 Presidential ticket for the Republican Party. Directed by Stephen K. Bannon, it features footage from former campaigns, interviews with Palin, and talks with Palin’s allies according to Movieline. The oddity here is that it’s not an indie aiming for festivals – it’s a non-objective documentary being released in Iowa. Then New Hampshire. And South Carolina. And Nevada. You know, the primary states.
