Fantastic Review: ‘Retreat’ Wants To Be ‘Dead Calm’ On An Island, But Forgets To Cast Australians
Fantastic Fest By Rob Hunter on October 7, 2011 | Be the First To CommentRetreat features some sweeping exterior shots and action, but for the most part it stays contained within a single home on an isolated and otherwise empty island. Martin (Cillian Murphy) and Kate (Thandie Newton) have come here to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and to try to deal with a recent, undisclosed rift between them. They’ve had happy times at this cabin in the past and are hoping to recapture that magic, but their attempts at reconciliation are interrupted by the arrival of a battered and bloodied man named Jack (Jamie Bell) who they find unconscious and armed outside. Their act of kindness is soon punished with unwanted knowledge when he awakens and shares what brought him to the island. It seems a deadly and unstoppable virus has begun ravaging the outside world, and their only hope of survival is to seal up the cabin until the airborne danger has passed. The island has no telephone access. The CB radio they’ve previously used to contact the mainland is strangely silent. And Jack strongly insists both for their safety and his that they follow his instructions. And a man with a gun can be fairly convincing…
Movie News After Dark: Superman, Cinematic Snack, Hans Zimmer’s Lips and a Zombie Tear-Jerker
Movie News By Neil Miller on February 17, 2011 | Be the First To CommentWhat is Movie News After Dark? This is a question that I am almost never asked, but I will answer it for you anyway. Movie News After Dark is FSR’s newest late-night secretion, a column dedicated to all of the news stories that slip past our daytime editorial staff and make it into my curiously chubby RSS ‘flagged’ box. It will (but is not guaranteed to) include relevant movie news, links to insightful commentary and other film-related shenanigans. I may also throw in a link to something TV-related here or there. It will also serve as my place of record for being both charming and sharp-witted, but most likely I will be neither of the two. I write this stuff late at night, what do you expect?
Kevin Carr’s Weekly Report Card: July 23, 2010
Features By Kevin Carr on July 24, 2010 | Be the First To CommentThis week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr sulks his head at not being able to see all the cool stuff that’s going on at Comic-Con 2010, but he knows he’s the lucky one because he was able to see Ramona and Beezus, Suck on that! Oh, and he gets a gander at Angelina Jolie in Salt, which ain’t bad, either.
UPDATED: Angelina Jolie Goes Bourne in Domestic ‘Salt’ Trailer
Movie News By Neil Miller on November 4, 2009 | Comments (7)Remember back when we reported that Angelina Jolie was coming on to the project known as Salt, taking over for Tom Cruise and forcing a re-write of the script to change the title character’s name from Edwin A. Salt to Evelyn A. Salt? This is that film.
Phillip Noyce Donates Directing Talent to ‘Mixed Blood’
Casting Couch By Cole Abaius on June 17, 2009 | Be the First To CommentIf that title didn’t get your blood boiling, try out my alternate title of “Samuel L. Jackson Continues to Get Work,” and see how that suits you. I don’t know much about this forthcoming flick, but I have a feeling that Detective Disaster Zondi is not going to be a fan of snakes.
First Look: Angelina Jolie in Salt
In Production By Paige MacGregor on March 3, 2009 | Comments (11)What’s one sure-fire way for a new movie to catch my interest? If it’s press release contains the name Angelina Jolie and the phrase femme fatale, that’s how.
The Kurt Wimmer scripted spy thriller Edwin A. Salt may star Cruise as the titular CIA Agent who is accused of being a Russian sleeper agent. He would then, of course, put heel to asphalt and high tail it away from his pursuers while trying to clear his good name.
