Fantastic Review: Machete Maidens Unleashed
Fantastic Fest By Robert Fure on October 20, 2010 | Comments (5)When documentarian Mark Hartley, the guy behind the excellent Not Quite Hollywood, set his sights on the violent Filipino machete wielding babe sub-genre I immediately said “What Filipino machete wielding babe sub-genre!?” Because that sounds like something I’d be interested in. I immediately thought about sitting in front of Not Quite Hollywood, pen and pad at the ready, taking copious notes on all the Australian films I had to track down. So naturally I grabbed my writing instruments and went into Machete Maidens Unleashed expecting a list of films for my sexual gratification and entertainment. My first reaction to MMU was “that was fun.” It played like a greatest hits collection of clips, interspersed with some very excellent commentary from the likes of Roger Corman, Joe Dante, and Sid Haig, among dozens of others. There were plenty of glimpses at bared breasts, a whole lot of stabbings and gunshots, and more one-liners than you can remember. It was fun, but is that all it was?
Machete Maidens Unleashed! The Naked Joys of Filipino Exploitation Films
Movie News By Rob Hunter on July 2, 2010 | Comments (3)I remember my first time like it was yesterday. The smooth and funky music beats, the naked flesh, the intoxicating emotions, the midgets, the decapitation, the giant rats… I’d seen some Australian exploitation movies previously, but the first time I watched the documentary Not Quite Hollywood I was filled with so much joy that it somehow manifested itself physically and shot from my body in a hot liquid arc across the room. Good times indeed, and well worth the extra clean-up fee.
American Grindhouse was my most anticipated film of SXSW 2010. I have studied grindhouse and exploitation cinema with the fervor of a doctoral candidate. But my research has been limited to simply getting my hands on as many of the films as possible so it’s all based on knowledge of the product. So the documentary American Grindhouse seemed gift-wrapped for me.
As you box up the turkey bits and safely stow the stuffing, here’s hoping your Thanksgiving was a happy one. While the official herald of the holiday season has ended, here at Junkfood Cinema it’s always turkey day.
Rob Hunter loves movies. He also loves working as a TV producer who sets up friends and strangers alike on blind dates with unwitting actresses. These two joys come together in the form of cash money payments that he receives every week and immediately uses to buy more DVDs.
