It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Channel Guide: A Column About TV

Almost every episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is exactly the same: the show’s pack of misguided ne’er-do-wells come up with some half-baked yet bafflingly elaborate scheme, shenanigans, shenanigans, shenanigans, strangely adorable Danny DeVito orbits the action, and then finally, all of the quixotic idealism at the top of the episode is either squashed by reason or melts into smug indifference. This simple structure is endearing—it’s the cornerstone of the show—and as a fan, you tune into Always Sunny expecting it, maybe even finding comfort in it; but you also expect the aforementioned shenanigans to be entertaining enough to justify that simplicity. The show’s seventh season—currently two episodes away from its finale—has been disappointing. The tried and true format, which in more prosperous times (see seasons 1-5) had been a boon, now seems threadbare, each week calling attention to how spotty the writing has become.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a movie news column set to the spectacle of a John Williams score. We begin tonight with the latest in scientific discovery. NASA and SETI have discovered a planet that has two stars. Their first thought? Name it “Tatooine.” We approve, but we can’t help but think this is a giant marketing campaign for the new Star Wars Blu-ray release. We’ll know when nude pics of the planet show up online.

This Week in DVD

Welcome back to our weekly look at new DVD releases! Last week’s trend of TV on DVD continues as we’re heading into the Fall TV season and studios want to remind you just how great some of their shows are. As you’ll find out below though not all of those shows were actually all that great. The summer’s first comic book superhero movie hits shelves today too alongside a handful of horror flicks, a martial arts movie, and this week’s surprising pick of the week. As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Meek’s Cutoff A small group of pioneers hire an adventurer named Meek (Bruce Greenwood) to lead their three wagon train west to California, but it quickly becomes clear that he may not be as capable as they believed. Tension escalates as they run low on food, water, and patience, but it’s the arrival of a lone Native American that may fracture the group for good. Kelly Reichardt’s film is an oddly attractive creation that lumbers slowly towards an uncertain fate, and while I’m still unsure of my thoughts on the ending the film as a whole refuses to leave my mind. There’s a haunted quality about it that works its way inside like so much dust and warm air and it keeps you mesmerized even as deceptively little is happening onscreen. Of course, Michelle Williams in a saucy bonnet doesn’t hurt either.

What is Movie News After Dark? For starters, it’s not a nightly movie news column that would usually lead with such a weak top story. However, any chance to lead with Tom Selleck’s mustache should be seized. So there you have it folks, now lets get on with it. Until this evening, I was not even aware that there were rumors of Adam Sandler putting together a remake of Three Men and a Baby starring David Spade, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider. Or perhaps I did know and have since blocked it out of my memory. That happens. Anyway, we can all rest easy, as Disney says it isn’t happening.

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly round-up of movie news and informational links that will marry whomever it damn well pleases, male, female, alien or otherwise. Except /Film’s Page 2, that bitch never called it back. She thinks she’s so cool because she’s on a “legitimate” film site that “people actually read.” Bitches be trippin’. Our most photogenic story tonight, a first official look at John Cusack in The Raven (working title) as the tormented Edgar Allen Poe. Lets face it, if that hair (facial and cranial) is real, we should be impressed. Also impressive is the expansive amount of Cusack-related news included in tonight’s edition of Movie News After Dark, so stick around.

Welcome back, it’s time for the longest day of the week. That pivotal day before Friday when everything gets simple. Thursday is also a great night for television, and this year is no different. Actually, this year is probably the most jam packed night of the week on the small screen. Everything from cops to vampires to college to dead people to spys to India, this Thursday has it all. So go grab that 16oz beer from the fridge and some fresh AAA batteries for the DVR remote because here comes Part V of the FSR Fall 2010 Watch List!

Aside from taking Dr. Cole Abaius’ advice to change the name of this column to ‘This Fortnight in Blu-ray,’ I can’t say that I’ve done much in the way of the HD format lately. So this week we’re back on the bus…

These two joys come together in the form of cash money payments that he receives every week and immediately uses to buy more DVDs. This week we take a look at a couple furry manimals, some suspense from abroad, and a mother who covers her kitchen floor with warm milk fresh from the source (and I don’t mean a cow).
