Indiana Jones 5

First Look: The Great Gatsby

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly thing about movies. No big deal. We begin tonight with a new image from The Great Gatsby featuring Leo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton looking quite dapper. One can only imagine how much more dapper this will all look when we see it for the first time in 3D. I like the word dapper.

Remember how much everybody loved Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and how fandom has been clamoring for further father/son bonding adventures between Indy and Sia Labeouf’s Mutt ever since it left theaters? Me either, so why are all the cast members of that film going around talking to MTV cameras about another sequel? Probably because George Lucas and company know that no matter how bad it looks, we’ll all go and see it anyways. We can’t help ourselves; it’s a sickness. And because of that, Ford seems to be busy preparing his creaking old body for a fifth go around in the iconic Indy togs. According to Shia LaBeouf, “I talked to Harrison Ford. He said he’s staying in the gym, he said he’s heard no word, but he does know that George Lucas is out there looking for a MacGuffin. He said he’s staying in the gym, so it means the movie is not so far off.” If the amount of time it took Lucas to find a MacGuffin for Crystal Skull is any indication, then Ford may be in that gym for quite some time.

If there was one thing that fans hated about Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull it’s that the magical realism of religion was tossed aside for a tale about aliens who had a love for polished glass. It didn’t seem right within the universe where, for whatever reason, a box with a bunch of angry, face-melting souls did. So, as a fan, I find myself questioning whether to groan or start a slow clap with the news that Indiana and company are going to be headed for the Bermuda Triangle. Will this be the right brand of magical realism for the series?

“Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] and I are sort of agreed on a germ of an idea and we’re seeing what comes of it.” It’s likely that some of you will be upset about that quote, which was given to the folks at the BBC by Indiana Jones himself, Harrison Ford. The rest of us are wondering one thing: germ? As in virus?

There’s a baseless rumor that’s not even going around the internet at all that Dr. Jones might be written into the next Indiana Jones movie. I don’t believe it at this point, but that doesn’t mean we can’t sound off on whether it’d be a good idea or not.

George Lucas and Harrison Ford

Proving yet again that old actors never die (they just keep playing the same roles), Harrison Ford is poised to put on the fedora and return as that most adventurish of professors – Indiana Jones. At least, that’s the word on the street.

To be fair, there is actually no ‘fanboy rage’ yet, but be sure that it is coming folks. In an interview with BBC News, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen star Shia LaBeouf made claims that director Steven Spielberg is already hard at work on a follow-up to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
