Hot Rod

Hot Rod

Billed as “From the co-creators of the hilarious, Emmy winning SNL digital short D**K IN A BOX,” it’s not a surprise that this film is loaded with sophomoric humor.

Rescue Dawn

Rescue Dawn

Just because it has been largely forgotten by critics and audiences this year doesn’t mean it should be forgotten.

Live Free or Die Hard

Live Free or Die Hard

While I was quite cynical when I heard they were making another Die Hard film, I found myself pleasantly surprised by Live Free or Die Hard.

Shrek the Third

Shrek the Third

Again, Far Far Away is threatened by Prince Charming, and in typical Shrek fashion, our hero journeys to save his fair lady, and teach Charming a lesson, making jabs at pop culture the entire way.

The Hoax

The Hoax

The one recurring thought that will run through your head while you watch “The Hoax,” the story of author Clifford Irving who faked the autobiography of Howard Hughes, is “How will they pull this off?” and that applies to both the film and the story.

Black Book

Black Book

For a movie that looks so “Hollywood”, Black Book is terribly grim, but that’s because, despite its epic surface, it isn’t Hollywood at all.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

Is it a foul offensive movie? No. Is it a good movie? Not really. Is it funny? Absolutely.

CSI: Miami - Season 5

CSI: Miami - Season 5

This is a show you know when you see it. There aren’t many shows that look like this, despite a plethora of shows being, more or less, similar in content.

Twin Peaks Definitive Gold Box Edition

Twin Peaks Definitive Gold Box Edition

Well it’s about damn time! The First Season of Twin Peaks was released to the delight of fans way back in 2001, though infuriatingly sans the superlative pilot, which was for years only available in grainy VHS or international-region DVD versions.

Magnum P.I. - Season 7

1986 called and Magnum PI is in the house. This 5-disc set hit store shelves on October 30th, 2007 and if you haven’t picked it up yet, you’re failing at life.

Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks

We all have guilty pleasures. Chocolate. Hannity & Colmes. John Tesh music. Snorting blow off the buttocks of a Thai hooker. The one thing all those have in common though is their general acceptance by polite society. My own guilty pleasure is more embarrassing than these, and I rarely find myself able to talk about […]

Mr. Brooks

Mr. Brooks

I didn’t expect to like Mr. Brooks although I was originally intrigued by the idea of Robin Hood playing a serial killer.

Death Proof

Death Proof

Death Proof opens on a pair of shapely feet, with polished toes, natch, resting on a sunlit dashboard. Tarantino needn’t even bother putting his name in the credits anymore.

Casshern

Casshern

Watching the opening moments of Kazuaki’s Kiriya’s Casshern, you might find yourself thinking you’ve found a serious science fiction gem. Set in the 21st century, mankind has endured a fifty year war, and is now suffering the consequences. Nuclear fallout, rampant disease from biological weapons, and horrible mutations threaten the human race.

Carnal Knowledge (Rental Pick of the Week)

Carnal Knowledge (Rental Pick of the Week)

A character portrait, both epic and intimate, that studies the sexual lives of two men, friends, over the course of the mid to late Twentieth Century, Carnal Knowledge does nothing if not remind us that life in post-war America was a lot dirtier than we’re often led to believe.

28 Weeks Later

28 Weeks Later

The original film “28 Days Later” will always have a place in my heart, mainly because it helped redefine the zombie genre. And while director Danny Boyle will insist this film isn’t a zombie movie (not about the undead but about people infected with a virus), it still plays out like one.

The Host (Gwoemul)

The Host (Gwoemul)

With The Host, Bong Joon-Ho has incontrovertibly affirmed his unrivaled talent as a contemporary reinventor of the classic American genre film. He’s an innovative traditionalist, as evidenced first in 2001 by Memories of Murder, the best cop movie of at least the last decade, and now he has reworked the monster movie the same way with The Host, the best monster movie at least since Hollywood effectively stopped making them (we’ll ignore the Godzilla remake, for example) all those decades ago.

The Jungle Book: 40th Anniversary Edition

The Jungle Book: 40th Anniversary Edition

Like many people in the last few decades, I saw “The Jungle Book” in the theaters only in re-release. Now, it has made its way out of the Disney vault for a two-disc Platinum Edition DVD. This loose adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s stories of Mowgli the Man Cub is remembered as the last film that Walt Disney himself had a personal hand in making.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

With the summer barely at our backs, the big movies from the season are now hitting DVD. One of the early releases is the second “Fantastic Four” film, which introduced the beloved character of the Silver Surfer.

Death Proof

Death Proof

I’m not happy with Dimension’s decision to split the “Grindhouse” DVD release into two separate pieces. I loved the three-hour-plus monstrosity that was the theatrical release, and I wish I could enjoy the “Grindhouse” experience unfettered at home.

Commando: Director’s Cut

Commando: Director’s Cut

In the retrospective featurette of “Commando,” director Mark Lester explains that the film set the stage for 80s action flicks. I’m not sure if that’s necessarily the case (considering it was proceeded by classics like “The Terminator,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Rambo”), but it definitely represents a grand example of the genre.

Superman Doomsday

Superman Doomsday

I was in college when they killed Superman. Of course, I knew this was nothing new. DC Comics had killed the Man of Steel dozens of times over the year. However, in the early 1990s, they really tried to make it an event. And they did, although our favorite Kryptonian was soon back in the comics a couple weeks later.

Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane

Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane

That, my friends, is a long title. Much longer than the original “Plane Dead,” but it’s kind of snazzy. I’d personally stay away from conjuring up memories of that awful bit of excrement called Snakes on a Plane but hey, whatever.

The Film Crew — “Killers from Space” and “Wild Women of Wongo”

The Film Crew — “Killers from Space” and “Wild Women of Wongo”

One of the greatest crimes against entertainment humanity was the cancellation of “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The likes of Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett and Mike Nelson, best known respectively as the voices of Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot and Mike Nelson, took some of the worst movies ever made that didn’t star Dane Cook and turned them into something entertaining, unlike any movie starring Dane Cook.

Reeker

Reeker

Does anyone remember Jarts? They were large darts with metal ends. You set a target in your yard, hurled the lawn dart in the air, and hoped it landed within the target. One of the few times Reeker tickled my imagination was in a scene where a blind man describes how he was blinded by a Jart, leading to a recall of the item.

The Camden 28

The Camden 28

In political conversation nowadays the word “religious” tends to be immediately succeeded by the word “right”, and for those dismayed by the hijacking of Christianity to fight abortion but not to fight against war, director Anthony Giacchino, in his straight forward documentary The Camden 28, takes us back to once upon a time when there […]
