Avatar comes out next week. Any guess as to what my recommendation will be? As for this week it’s pretty slim pickings, but there a re a handful of new movies worth a rental including ones featuring Woody Harrelson as a homemade superhero, Russell Crowe as an aging detective from Buffalo, and a boat filled with rock n roll DJ’s getting high and getting laid. And all of them are better than Avatar.

Just as Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass will introduce us to psychotic children in masks and costumes, fighting crime despite their clear lack of any super-powers, Peter Stebbings’ Defendor will do the same for adult wackos.

This week it’s all about love, growing old, fighting mythical creatures, taming mythical creatures and getting Sleeping Beauty’s lazy ass out of bed. In fact, let me just take a moment to say something I’ve been wanting to say for a long time: I wish she’d get a job already.

Did you know that Canada makes movies? It’s true, and often they’re actually quite good. Exotica, Maelstrom, Porky’s, the work of David Cronenberg, but now the Canadians are turning it up a notch and throwing their beaver fur hats into the biggest film genre yet.
