Culture Warrior: Steve Jobs and the Cinema of Invention
Culture Warrior By Landon Palmer on October 11, 2011 | Comments (1)Amongst the many reactions to Steve Jobs’s death last week, I found one comparison that people drew to be quite compelling. In order to find a fitting historic analogy to illustrate the cultural significance of Jobs’s life, comparisons ran the gamut from Nikola Tesla to, erm, John Lennon (“think different,” I guess?). But several people, including, Roger Ebert, brought to light continuities with Thomas Edison. Edison, like Jobs, was an industrialist: part inventor, mostly capitalist. But specific to his own life, Edison spent most of his career securing patents and making improvements to existing technologies rather than building something from scratch. Edison’s reputation associates him with a great deal more invention than he was actually involved in. I’m not trying to be cynical about Jobs. Far from it. In fact, I’ve been more than a little annoyed with the backlash to consumer mourning about Jobs than any initial hyperbole associated with Jobs’s death in the first place. I don’t give a flying shit about executives in pretty much any industry, but saying “he’s just a CEO” does not negate the great intellectual worth and cultural interest of Jobs himself. Jobs, like Edison, developed a cult of personality that extended well beyond the person.
As the movies of 2010 comes to a close, it’s time to look back and revisit the finer points of cinema. But here at Film School Rejects, we like to turn the spotlight not just on the best, but also on the worst. This year has been a particularly rough year for movies as more films fizzled than we expected. With the year quickly coming to a close, it’s time to look back and realize which films didn’t just disappoint, but caused us the most pain. So with the help of the entire staff here at FSR, our own curator of the wretched Kevin Carr has compiled the list of the year’s most unwatchable, unbearable and unfortunately unforgettable films — may there be mercy on the souls of anyone who endured all of these gems…
Exclusive: Spierig Brothers Talk Vampire Survival and ‘Dark Crystal’
Features By Cole Abaius on May 13, 2010 | Be the First To CommentThe Daybreakers directors urge us to go grab our own cameras, to be Willem Dafoe and to have faith in a Dark Crystal sequel.
In all seriousness, I just don’t find vampires that interesting and there haven’t really been any good vampire movies in the last two decades. That said, Daybreakers looked promising. It seemed stylish, had Sam Neil, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe in it. Definitely a few points in the plus column.
It’s been a while since This Week in Blu-ray has been so late. But traveling got the best of me this past week, and here we are. Sure, it’s Thursday. But my most loyal readers will have waited, especially in a week like this, when it could very well go either way on so many of the new releases.
This week sees one of the best vampire film in years (Daybreakers), the return of the Jew hunter (Edge of Darkness), brooding and gun-toting angels (Legion), undead frogs (Mutants), dead krauts (North Face), two average Thai flicks (Legend of the Tsunami Warrior and Phobia), and more!
