Exploring The Twilight Zone #66: Two
Exploring the Twilight Zone By Scott Beggs on September 6, 2011 | Comments (1)With the entire original run of The Twilight Zone available to watch instantly, we’re partnering with Twitch Film to cover all of the show’s 156 episodes. Are you brave enough to watch them all with us? The Twilight Zone (Episode #66): “Two” (airdate 9/15/61) The Plot: The only surviving male and female from opposing forces play a game of cat and also cat with each other in a deserted city. The Goods: First of all, you may have noticed by the date that we’re writing about this episode almost exactly 50 years after it first aired. That the episode (let alone the series) is still so damned engaging is a testament to fresh, universal writing that is (at its best) reduced down into some individualistic character or situation. Fortunately this episode, the first of season 3, features both. However, the situation isn’t unique (not even to the series). Serling mirrors the series’ first episode but instead of one man alone in a city without people, it’s a man and woman finding themselves without the aid of other human life.
In the midst of the Cold War a Norwegian diplomat, Arne Treholt, was convicted of treason against his country for selling secrets to the Soviet Union in the early ’80s. This is true. Not necessarily that he sold secrets as his conviction and twenty year prison term suggests, but just that he was convicted.
In 1992, after serving 8 years of his prison term, Treholt was released and to this day continues to plead his innocence regarding any treasonous activity. This is true.
In 2010, Norwegian filmmaker Thomas Malling made a film depicting the events precisely as they played out back in the 1980s in which Treholt was in fact the leader of a professionally trained black-ops group of ultra-human ninjas. This is true. Not necessarily that Treholt was a ninja mastermind, just that Malling made a film about Treholt being one.
‘Tinker, Tailor’ Grabs Mark Strong, Stays In the Cold War
Movie News By Scott Beggs on September 17, 2010 | Comments (2)While the question of whether Let Me In is going to live up to Let the Right One In, the more important question is when we’ll get to see Tomas Alfredson’s new project – Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The easy answer is: next year. The right answer is: not soon enough. Now, the inspired cast of Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, and Tom Hardy is being added onto by Mark Strong (who will also be appearing as Sinestro in next year’s Green Lantern). It’s also been confirmed that the story will stay firmly in the Cold War era, as novelist John Le Carre intended it. Has there ever been a more highly-anticipated film with so many commas in the title? [The Playlist]
