Who in their right mind would want to see a prequel to Psycho? Sequels and remakes have been attempted, but have failed miserably recapturing the original’s magic. If Gus Van Sant can’t come out looking good when playing Alfred Hitchcock, then why even bother? A producer and writer from the show, Lost honcho Carlton Cuse, attended this year’s Southwest by Southwest to both tell us and show us why, premiering the show’s pilot to a few hundred people. It’s fair to say he answered the question of “who cares?” swiftly, mainly because of the prowess of Vera Farmiga, helping to bring real drama to the show’s key relationship. The pilot has a good deal of set up, but it still allows for smaller, more nuanced moments to tells us everything we need to know about Norman (Freddie Highmore) and his mother’s dynamic.

According to Variety, Lost producer Carlton Cuse has been hired to write the disaster flick San Andreas: 3D. He’s now the second writer to give it a rewrite after Allan Loeb took a pass at Andre Fabrizio & Jeremy Passmore’s script. It must be hard to create an earthquake in Southern California. The movie is part of the Warners pipeline, expected to hit in 2014, and Journey 2 director Brad Peyton might be taking the directorial chair. A bunch of rewrites aren’t uncommon, but with the names they’ve gotten, maybe it should be encouraging that they’re putting so much effort into a 3D adventure movie.

It’s been over a year since the Lost finale, and it doesn’t seem like the outcries have died down yet. “I loved it!” and “It sucked!” are the most popular responses the ending has seemed to gotten. However, when you’re hitting the message boards, you’ll mostly come across the “it sucked” sentiment. Now, J.J. Abrams asks those “it sucked” folks if they can do better: “For years, I had people praising Lost to death, and now they say: ‘I’m so pissed at you for the end of Lost.’ I think a lot of people who were upset with the ending, were just upset that it ended. And I’ve not yet heard the pitch of what the ending should have been. I’ve just heard: ‘That sucked.’”

What is Movie News After Dark? This is a question that I am almost never asked, but I will answer it for you anyway. Movie News After Dark is FSR’s newest late-night secretion, a column dedicated to all of the news stories that slip past our daytime editorial staff and make it into my curiously chubby RSS ‘flagged’ box. It will (but is not guaranteed to) include relevant movie news, links to insightful commentary and other film-related shenanigans. I may also throw in a link to something TV-related here or there. It will also serve as my place of record for being both charming and sharp-witted, but most likely I will be neither of the two. I write this stuff late at night, what do you expect?

For many fans, closing the book on Lost once and for all has been a difficult task. Not only was it one of the most devoutly followed shows of all time — a series that showed us that the world of television could be delivered in a manner that felt cinematic, but existed over a longer period of time — but it was also one of the most intriguing and divisive shows in recent times. Our most recent memory of the J.J. Abrams championed show is just that — the great divide created by the big finale, dubbed appropriately “The End.” On May 23, 2010, it all came to an end. And with it came the answers to questions, some six years in the making, as well as more questions that have continued to plague the starving masses to this day. None of that hysteria will end with the release of the Complete Collection on Blu-ray. The questions remain. However, this week’s release of Lost in its entirety, complete with delicious goodies, is meant for a celebration. It’s time to look back at Lost from the beginning and celebrate one heck of a journey.

It’s been more than a week since the big finale, and we’re still talking about Lost. I say give it a few weeks and it will be old news. But for now, we’re going to continue on our quest for answers.

Like all of you, I have my own emotional and intellectual response to the Lost finale: its meaning, its significance, and whether or not it was satisfactory. But since Sunday the Interwebs have run the gamut of all possible responses to the show’s farewell night, so my response to Lost instead is a look at what its run may mean for the future of televisual storytelling.

In honor of tonight’s finale of LOST, something that many fans have been waiting six full years to see, we have decided to open up a discussion thread in our comments section. Over the next several hours, questions will be answered. More questions will probably be asked. And in the end, we will all be left in a world without one of the most compelling shows in the history of television.

It’s no news to anyone that LOST has spent a lot of its airtime creating questions and interesting characters (who, yes, were just as often quickly killed off). But now, six seasons into the game, a lot of viewers are demanding answers — some of which they should get, and others which the creators/writers are currently digging themselves a hole in the process of trying to answer.

Last night I recapped the second to last episode, “What They Died For,” exploring all of the questions that have been answered and discussing some of the questions that have risen just in time for the Big Finish. Today, I’m looking back much further — back to the beginning. Well, before the beginning.

The end is nigh. With Lost dancing through the final few hours of its heralded six-year run, it’s hard not to be at least a bit nostalgic every time a character of yore appears on screen. And as we a thrust — more literally than we’d ever expected — toward the finish line, questions are being answered.

How do you follow up after last week’s emotional explosion? If you’re the producers of Lost, the answer is simple. You follow up with an episode that is perhaps one of the most divisive frames in the six year run of the series.
