Almost ten years ago, sci-fi fans went nuts over the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. The show wrapped up several years ago, and the prequel series Caprica came and went as well. However, there’s a new movie on DVD and Blu-ray that can take you back to a time of war with the Cylons. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome started off as a web series, but now is available in its full form on home video. Sure, it’s nowhere near as good as the actual series, but it’s entertaining enough to return to space with a young William Adama. So by the gods, enjoy the movie with a glass of your favorite adult beverage.

During a panel about the state of the Battlestar Galactica franchise at this year’s WonderCon, Michael Taylor, the co-creator of Blood and Chrome—a Battlestar prequel that you may remember was green-lighted by SyFy back in 2010—screened a trailer for the two-hour pilot. This latest extension of the Battlestar universe revolves around 20-something William Adama, a recent Academy graduate. The images Taylor culled together and presented to the WonderCon audience were exciting—set in space and filled with Viper pilots, the look of it is much more in line with the original (reimagined) series than Caprica—if a bit depressing, since the show’s future is still uncertain. Last anyone heard, SyFy’s enthusiasm for the project was waning and as a result, they were thinking of maybe, possibly, one day breaking the pilot up into pieces and delivering it to us as an online series instead of airing it in its entirety on TV. As much as I’d like to eventually see Blood & Chrome in one form or another, I understand SyFy’s ambivalence. Caprica really did kill the franchise’s momentum.

Bryan Singer has been talking about wanting to make a Battlestar Galactica movie for quite awhile now. But Singer is also one of those directors who always seems to be talking about wanting to make a lot of movies, so you never know what’s really going to happen and what isn’t. Recently some things have gone down to make this adaptation of the late-70s TV series (and, reportedly, not of the mid-2000s remade TV series) possible, however. Firstly, Singer’s remake of Excalibur has fallen apart, leaving a gaping hole in his schedule that should likely be filled with work on Galactica. And now, there’s even more concrete evidence that work on this project is going to start moving forward, as Deadline Rockvale is reporting that Universal has hired John Orloff to write a script. Orloff is a fairly established screenwriter already, and he most recently penned Roland Emmerich’s Anonymous and Zack Snyder’s movie about the owls which are from Ga’Hoole, so it would seem to me that his hiring is a good indication that this is project is being taken very seriously, which is good news for fans of space ships and robot people. Even better news is that Orloff seems to be a pretty obsessive fan of the Galactica universe himself. Now that Christmas is over, those of you who partake in the getting of gifts from relatively clueless relatives may have emerged victorious with gift cards to delightfully under-stocked retail stores. What will you do with said gift cards? Will you buy something to put into that shiny new Blu-ray player you also received from Santa (I know you still believe!)?  Unfortunately for many of you, this week’s round of Blu-ray releases isn’t quite as fruitful as one would hope for the week after the big holiday. But I’m sure if you come along with me on a little journey, you might find something worthy of your time and magnetically-striped money.

Before the days of LOST, 24, Battlestar Galactica, It’s Always Sunny and Mad Men, there was one thing everyone could agree on. The cop was king. Dragnet, JAG, Magnum, P.I., Miami Vice. These are shows that defined their generations and set the bar of quality programming. Maybe it was the fact that the characters were witty jerks who just can’t get enough out of pissing each other off. Maybe it was the fact that characters in the genre were always in search of that one defining moment in their lives. Maybe it was just the eternal battle between good versus evil. Whatever it was, cop shows held a special place in many people’s hearts. With the exception of a select few, the genre as a whole went down hill in the last two decades, but after seeing what the last two years had to offer, I think that the once beloved genre is getting ready for a second coming.

If fans of Battlestar Galactica showed up at Comic-Con this year expecting some Caprica shaking news, they most certainly walked away disappointed. During the panel, storymen Kevin Grazier and Michael Taylor were on hand, along with Composer Bear McCreary, and former-Apollo current-Zarek Richard Hatch served as moderator. When asked about the potential for more movies, the word was that they “weren’t sure how much [they] can say,” but there is an effort to address more stories in a way similar to how The Plan furthered the universal view of all things modern BSG. I’m certain fans can expect more Battlestar movies in the future though, as we were told that “the Universe will continue to give us more adventure in the future.” Also still in the future are new episodes of the SyFy series Caprica, which airs in January, and the November 2010 release of “The Science of Battlestar Galactica.

As expected, SyFy has announced the return of Caprica, the television series prequel to Battlestar Galactica. The second half of the (rather long) first season will debut in January 2011, with the exact date yet to be determined. In season 1.5, the once idyllic world of Caprica – as well as life across the colonies – falls prey to an explosive chain reaction of consequences set off by the characters’ many questionable actions in the season’s first half. Tensions rise, power shifts and the line between reality and the virtual world becomes increasingly blurred as everyone struggles to learn – and conquer – the stakes in this volatile setting. As the season races towards its stunning conclusion, events of each episode lay the framework for the inevitable (and brutal) clash between the newly-created Cylon race and their human creators. A trailer for the second half of the season will be shown at the Caprica panel at Comic-Con on July 23. It will hit the web several days later. [SyFy]

Leave it to the BBC to brighten up our afternoon with news of yet another interesting series in the development pipeline. While other networks are knocking off Avatar and others are tapping geek girl Olivia Munn for their new shows, BBC America has tapped Battlestar Galactica star Jamie Bamber and several others for their new futuristic sci-fi show Outcasts.
