Anderson barely based the movie on the novel, but for what it's worth, they are definitely two different characters in the source material. Also, Anderson has publicly stated that the two characters are indeed separate entities, and that it was only by chance that Dano wound up playing both roles.

In short, Josh Radde once again doesn't know what he's talking about.

On the question of whether Eli and Paul are the same person, can't someone find the answer in the novel on which the movie is based?

A few images from this film are still seared into my brain. The cinematography is unbelievable. It is quite fun to find a film which takes you on a journey to find the protagonist/antagonist, and still fighting to sympathize with such greed and ambition. Anderson has somehow managed great filmaking complexities at such a young age. I'm glad he takes his time.
