Honestly i think the upcoming release of The Strangers has the most potential of the upcoming horror movies and could possibly provide a boost to the horror genre.

It's actually not based on any real murders. It's based on an event in the producers chilhood when someone knocked on their door asking for someone. He later found out several empty homes had been broken into in their neighborhood that night.

***Spoiler alert***
Just saw the movie, I agree there is no plot and the reaction of the characters is plain idiotic. For starters, the car scene, last I remember Volvos came with horns! In a panic situation you dont get out of the car, you just keep your pedal to the metal and drive, even through the house. The gun for heavens sake with all the bulleta he had in his pocket, I would have went out and shot everyone in sight, why lay behind the bushes. When the friend arrives home, after getting a brick through the windshield , hmm remind me why did he walk to the house not deive? and yet suspicious he enters the house and leave the deafeniing music playing. For crying out loud you could stop the player and scream their names right. Either our characters have a super low IQ, or they are palin dumb. Sorry this movie is not worth your dollar.

What a good movie! Just watched it tonight as it was released on DVD this weekend!... my heart was beating fast through the entire movie!! it's so freaky! love it! I don't like horrors and gruesome stuff like the SAW movies! I refuse to watch those, but I love scary movies! so this even though its a horror.. its not really! more like a terror! Not gruesome! just tense! loved it!

I couldn't disagree more, gang. The Strangers was an elegantly handled horror movie that, sure, borrows a lot from other movies, but only the best parts, excising most of the tired horror conventions. (Several false endings, etc.) It wasn't innovative, but it was masterfully handled, and that's why it didn't really matter that we saw the end at the beginning: it was all about the execution, and its success, despite our knowing "how it ends," made it all the more impressive. Plus, I definitely didn't think it was without substance: it had a lot to say, albeit subtly, about marriage & family values!!

Agreed. Had high hopes, but this turned out to be more of cheap scares with "Boo!" moments. I had heard the "based on" parts were the Manson Murders and from when the director/writer had a childhood experience of someone knocking on their door in the night and then finding out later that other houses had been robbed. The Keddie Murders sound pretty nasty too though (thanks Wiki!).

Showing the ending at the beginning was a huge mistake, as you pointed out. The "are they or aren't they" moments were immediately resolved by remembering what we had seen.

Overall it felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to be a psychological horror or a plain blood 'n guts horror. In the end the latter won out, which was disappointing.

Saw it last night and I agree completely... some solid scares and effectively creepy scenes, but the predictability and the protagonists' stupid actions outweighed and outlasted the fun.
