Looks to me like all the reviews on this page are obviously from people who are not born again (saved). I began to read the reviews to see if this is a good movie for my family and can see it is not. Every review I have read is against GODS Holy Word (the KJV). God intended for us to have a Shepard to watch over his flock to warn and protect. This is what was being done from the pulpit and bulletin. When we go to meet our LORD/GOD we will have to give an account for all said and done while here on earth. I do not believe that Jesus would watch this movie from reading all the reviews on the internet, therefore my family will not watch this movie either.

I just loved the movie and don't understand what all the fuss is about. Many of my church going friends were told from the pulpit and the church bulliten that this movie was "off limits" because it was anti-church. I found nothing whatsoever bad about the movie. I wonder if maybe these churches are worried that people might start thinking for themselves and feel the need to censor. Maybe they are like the Magisterium??????

The film is anti-Church, but not atheistic. It might be anti-Christian. The Gyptians are obviously the Gypsies (Roma), who, to participate in society, have their demons removed - just like all the people conquered by Christian expansion are forced, in boarding schools and other institutions, to deny their ancestral religious beliefs. The coalition of heroes represent a lot of groups oppressed by Christian and European global expansion: ethnic minorities, witches, dissenters, pirates, and animals/nature. The role of technology is also interesting - technology can be good or bad, depending on whether its associated with good or bad. The compass, a tool for finding truth, is good. The mechanical flying bugs that spy on you are bad.

Unfortunately for me, these ideas were more interesting than the movie itself, which felt rushed.

[...] If you can get past the controversy and transcend the discussions of politics and religion, you should have fun watching The Golden Compass. Rather than saying, “I wonder if the Magisterium is supposed to represent the modern Catholic church?,” sit on the edge of your seat and say “Wow Two polar bears beating the shale out of each other. Cool” I guarantee you’ll come out of the film a happier person.” The Golden Compass | FilmSchoolRejects.com [...]
