sounds exactly like the movie DOOM, (and possibly the video game, but im not certain of its exact story line)

*genetic mutations
*corporate ethics
*transport to the cosmos via 'arc'
*disaster strikes a remote compound
*solitary confinement
*low budget

its kinda like how every tom cruise movie is identical.
he advances in his career- he questions his abilities and quits, he comes back to succeed and save the day!
