I'm glad to see that I was not the only person underwelmed by the reboot. I would have loved this movie if it was a regular sci/fi outing but it's not, it's Star Trek. The whole time traveling plot completely undermines the original series and for those who thought Chris Pine was great as Kirk, I just don't see it. From the beginning of the movie, the Captain's chair is basically handed to him on a gold platter – he doesn't earn it in any way, shape, or form. The romance between Spock and Uhura is preposterous. I did like Keith Urbane as Bones and the reference to the Kobayashi Maru test. The motivation (not to mention charisma) of the villain was completely lacking. Can somebody who is a Star Trek fan explain to me why they love this movie so much?

I agree, Magnum – it seems everyone here (including Trekkies) is so blown away by the special effects that they have forgotten that Star Trek is about more than that. I would have loved this movie if it was a regular sci/fi action flick but it basically discounts the original series and that's not cool for me.

Science is what led to the invention of the cell phones, which are used by the main populace (so called anyways). Science has contributed to great inventions to help our feeble, and helpless lives. And most of the science contributor's are the ones some of you call "nerds" or "geeks".

I'm no science major, but I do have enough knowledge to state that this movie blows harder than Debbie's Dallas barn yard trip. JJ didn't want Trek fans to join this alternate universe, and so I won't. I'll maintain my composure in the true Trek universe, and enjoy watching my DVD collections, and reruns with no qualm at all. I'm even purchasing all the Next Generation Episodes, and maybe the Enterprise episodes to satisfy my lust for Trek fiction. But watching this movie that rapes the success of the Original series as lazy, thereby proving that these producers and JJ Abrams klans (like he's not a nerd or something) who created a retarded looking starship, and felt that the Mission Impossible III CGI scenes were needed to bring Trek back to life. That's the problem too! Trek wasn't dead! Paramount is, and will always be a bunch of dead beats with no imagination at all. Seems like Matrix is the only movie that was produced using original ideas. Everything else Paramount does is nothing more than reboots. No talent at all….absolutely none.

I originally was very angered with the choices of casting, but yet I thought Quinto showed the most potential. But then I saw him act as Spock, and he didn't really have that inquisitive logical nature of Spock…rather, his confused frustrated dual nature. Is Spock very conflicted in the movie since he is very young, and not yet in control? Or is this just a different kind of Spock?…

also, does this movie abandon the smart science of the Star Trek universe for flashy action? Are there any science nerd shoutouts like in the original series, etc?
p.s. Chris Pine and Karl Urban really look right for this

I hate to be pedantic, but "yin and yang" imply equal and opposite. They have nothing to do with two different parts of an overall experience, whether they complement each other or not (audio and visual). The yin and yang would be audio against no audio, or visual versus no visual.

If I was you, I'd alter your review because you wouldn't want to sound ignorant… ;)

But it's all fiction anyway. Just relax. Just enjoy it. Don't get wrapped up in fake "timelines." Or universe. You still have hundreds of hours of all shows/movies if you need the nostalgia. But think of it like Batman or Dracula ect. It's modern mythology. It has main concepts but doesn't have to be slavish to the source. Star Trek either modernized or dies…

I am very happy to see this movie getting good reviews. At first I was one of the non believers in it, seeing the new Enterpise left me empty at first. But now I realize Star Trek as we knew it is currently dead, killed by people with good intentions but poor skills. But here is the chance for it to be reborn, it may not be exactly the same and perhaps that is both good and bad. But we are not going to get 'better' Trek by not seeing this movie or boycotting it, we will get no Trek at all. So I for one am looking forward to seeing this movie once if not more in the theaters, hoping that through my hard earned dollars we'll end up seeing at least a sequel if not at best, a new TV series as well.

Thanks, but what about future Treks? Still in a different universe? The reason I ask is could it be like the famous 5 yr mission is about to embark? Do we forget about all that has happened? If they are in a different universe, Khan didn't happen (or won't) The events in any of the history will be gone? Like in City on the Edge of Forever?

Wow, sounds like an utterly amazing night! I'm very jealous. Glad to hear the movie is full of goodness. I've been on the fence with how I will feel about the movie. I'm trying very hard to keep in mind that this is a reboot to the series and not what I've grown up watching.

I don't want to give too much away, but I will say this: this Trek really does exist in its own universe. The characters are very similar, but some of them have subtle differences. It strikes a good balance in that way. It is filled with a bit of nostalgia, but it also works hard to be a completely new brand of Trek.

If that makes sense….
