B-???

I watched this thing last night and it was horrendous. It was laughably bad in a lot of scenes, and the one thing it has going for it, "action" is shitty - it's just the same robot fight over and over again.

I did up a review here: http://filmvisuality.blogspot.com/2009/07/revie...

I guess I can see the appeal of these films but Transformers 2 has nothing on the first one. Truly awful.

I don't know what was worse about the "film" that fact that pretty much every other character was the comedy relief or shia yelling names out for no reason every other second or the shitty college d-bag sidekick or the fact that it took so long to kill all of them and the last five mins of the film to kill the fallen. over all the movie was wack even though expectations were not huge for myself. just had entirely to much going on & bad one liner jokes. wack!

If you want "rage-filled rampages" of reviews that toss in one humorous and cheeky analogy after another explaining how bad this film is, or if you want a fanboy rant on how awesome or terrible the movie is, there's plenty of that on the Internet. In my defense, what I tried to accomplish with this review was to be rather neutral towards the film, to acknowledge that films like these will meet your assumptions going in, be they positive or negative. I wanted to acknowledge why people will love this film and why people will hate it in equal measure. This review will not change your mind regarding what you think of Transformers 2 before or after you see it, and I'm not encouraging anybody to go to the theater who doesn't think they will like it, because they won't. For me, a B- is a rather neutral grade, as it reserves praise and criticism, but I think the final verdict is less important than the arguments made in the body of my review.

Don't get me wrong, Transformers 2 is a largely artless and vapid movie, but I find it hard to criticize it based on these terms when everybody knows that going in. I'm a movie snob, and there's evidence of that in my other posts; the best time I've ever had in a movie theater was seeing Andrei Rublev, a black-and-white 3 1/2 hour Soviet film. I have pretentious, highfalutin taste in movies, and I am legitimately entertained by such movies and often bored by Hollywood entertainment. But I couldn't go into this movie with any sort of expectations than those I had, that Transformers 2 would be anything but silly, dumb, and loud. And when I stepped down from my critical pedestal and looked at it directly into its empty robotic eyes, I surprisingly found that I had a good time.

Is it a problem that we need to lower our expectations and not engage our brain to enjoy a Hollywood blockbuster? Absolutely. Filmmakers like Paul Greengrass and J. J. Abrams are 10x the Hollywood filmmaker Bay will ever be, as their films are entertaining for entertainment's sake while respecting the intelligence of their audience. But I find it hard to sympathize with hating a movie like Transformers when it doesn't pose itself as being anything other than it's big, dumb self. There are problems with it, but it's also (for the most part) harmless. It's when movies like this pose as significant (like Bay's past work) that these movies become detrimental to filmmaking at large. It's okay for movies like this to exist. They have their place. Whether or not you like these movies (as I often don't), they have mass appeal for one reason or another, and I think it's important to stoop down to their level and see why. Once I did, I found that I had a big, dumb, fun time at the cineplex.

I am no film snob, and enjoy a good razzle-dazzle, smash 'n' flash popcorn blockbuster like most others.... But they can still have a LITTLE redeeming value when it comes to story or characters. This movie was shallow to the Nth degree, and so the thrill of the effects and action lost much of the joy I found in them in the first one.... Especially at 2 1/2 hours!? But my son and hubbie were mesmerized, so for me there is consolation in that. My father HATED it! LOL. See me review it with my dad at: www.youtube.com/gabndad

In response to your first point, I think that's a great quote, and there's certainly an argument to be made there, but when people speak of "mindless action movies," I think what they are most referring to is the lack of logic operating in such movies, or how they basically spit in the face of logic and reason. To this I would ask, is fun logical or illogical? Is it calculated or spontaneous? Isn't one of the joys of cinema to see manifested onscreen events that defy the logic and reason that define and constrain our living world?

Another review that tries to save a franchise that is so far from the original content. It seems the only way to make Hollywood and Bay especially realize that we won't pay our hard earned money to see shitty messes masquerading as good cinema.

Sorry Landon, but you sound like you are trying to convince me why I should like the movie, sort of the way a used car sales man tries to make you overlook a broken windshield or a bumper falling off a car he is trying to sell. When I have to over look or suspend my belief in good story and good acting that normally means the film is a bomb.

I think the "It's not meant to be an insightful movie" argument is one of the worst ways to defend ROTF ever. That's like saying it's okay to be racist, sexist or mindless because you don't know better. It's okay because it's expected, right? Wrong. We are talking about a film that featured characters, very clearly supposed to be African-American, that can not read, constantly unleash obscenities and commit Black-on-Black violence to each other. The Autobot Twins make Jar Jar Binks look as eloquent as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Add in dogs humping, robots dry humping Megan Fox's leg, Bumblebee pissing in a girl's face and a Decepticon with balls. So how did you give this a B- again? Because you turned your brain off before you walked into the theater? Come on, man. You're better than that.

You say it would seem easy to point the finger at Bay. Do you blame anyone that does? Whether you say it is necessary or not, a film of this size has to be smarter than this. I am not talking about plot as much as the sensitivity to the world outside of Bay's land of explosions. Much of his market consists of youth. Yes, the parents don't have to take the kids but do we have to hear bitch, mother fucker, pop a cap in your ass, etc. from Autobots of all characters?

Michael Bay is the director's equivalent of a redneck and frat boy rolled into one. I can't wait til Transformers 3 when the latest Decepticon can pop his pink metallic collar, shoot a rifle into the sky, slip an Energon rufie into Optimus Prime's sister's drink and date rape her. It's the next logical step, right? Transformers 2 is trash. I am glad that I didn't waste any money on it. The only people that should feel obligated to watch it would be us media members, and I feel bad that we do. Who knew that McG would look like Steven Spielberg, who I can not believe was attached to this project, when placed next to Michael Bay this summer.

It’s the next logical step, right? Transformers 2 is trash. I am glad that I didn’t waste any money on it. The only people that should feel obligated to watch it would be us media members, and I feel bad that we do. Who knew that McG would look like Steven Spielberg, who I can not believe was attached to this project, when placed next to Michael Bay this summer.

I guess I agree with this review for the most part, but if Bay knew he was making a simple explosion-heavy action flick, why did he make the movie two and a half hours long?

He's just a shitty reviewer. Look at his "Quantum of Solace" review. He says that James Bond isn't an action hero, which is fucking absurd. It's also quite funny that sometimes he actually uses logic in his reviews while not doing it for others, like in the ROTF review where he mentions that you can't outrun explosions. If only he used his fucking brain when he reviewed "No Country for Old Turds".
