I thought this was a poor movie from Mel Gibson. I’d rate this as a straight to dvd. Uninteresting script and acting. To see it getting an A rating is a big surprise for me. Average and unstimulating.

Edge Of Darkness quickly devolves into another showcase for Gibson’s snorting-bull act, a routine he could happily have shelved during his time off.

Great review. I was actually going to let this fall onto the netflix queue, but now I'll actually go see it in theaters. I too am all about my 'man loses person, man gets mad, man rains hell' movies.

Shockingly, I'd go B- or C+ – keeping in mind that a C+ isn't actually a bad grad. Still above average.

Angry Mel Gibson seeking revenge is always entertaining. The Patriot (what an awful but fantastic film), Payback, Ransom… I'm sure this will deliver. Let's see how much people have forgotten about Officer Sugar-Tits and the problems caused by Jews.

Brian you forgot to mention “Payback”, one of Gibsons best movies where revenge is a motivating factor.

I plan on going to see it and hopefully it lives up to this review.

I'd say a B- feels about right. The story problems are pretty big and shouldn't be ignored, but the action scenes are sharp and Gibson is fantastic. (I would have bumped it up to a solid B if they kept the scene from the mini-series where Gibson's character kisses his dead daughter's dildo.)

Thanks for the in depth review Brian. The film does get comparisons to Taken. While I really enjoyed Taken, it's not a great film. (A very good film with almost infinite re-watch potential due to the lightning pace, which you mentioned.) I was hoping this film were, if not more than Taken, at least something (Slightly) different.

It pains me to say this but I agree with Cole on this one. I liked the movie, loved the bloody action, and really enjoyed seeing Gibson onscreen again… but the whole thing felt extremely rushed. There are several gaps in logic as well as unexplained jumps in the narrative.

But still lots of fun and definitely worth seeing.

While I dug the movie, there was a lot that didn't really hit right for me. The hallucination thing never paid off, I really liked Winstone's character – but there were things they showed with him that were never fleshed out. They didn't really mean anything. Specifically the doctor's visit.

Plus, Campbell is a giant fan of the person appearing out of nowhere on screen and the surprise-but-not-a-surprise ultra-violence. Fun movie, but not really anything that fantastic.

Still – put a dying person in Mel Gibson's arms and the guy out acts everyone within a 100 mile radius.
