Though certainly not the pioneering experience it's been touted as, Avatar is an exciting, visually arresting, and occasionally powerful slab of Hollywood filmmaking driven by one of the industry's most committed, passionate, stand-alone creative forces.

As awesome as the graphic work in Avatar is, there is something about the film's environment that bothers me as somewhat unrealistic. I've not been quite able to pin it down other than to say it must be something with all the bio-luminescent stuff everywhere and the creature designs. Otherwise I think it's a decent flick where film CG catches up to videogaming graphics pretty well.

I watched the movie because most my friends told me "you gotta see it". Story-wise it was simple and predictable. My BF almost fell asleep during it. The scenes were beautiful and the special effects rose to the occasion. Still it's not a movie I'd watch again and wouldn't see it winning Oscars other than for makeup/special effects. But it's Cameron and I have a feeling he's gonna gather many statues.

I think there is more than one possible Oscar Nominations for this movie.

I doubt if it can win the best picture award based on what you said, "a story that isn’t incredibly inventive"

You'll be seeing a rebuttal from Rob Hunter and I'm sure some other articles from the other Rejects. So stay tuned, as there's plenty more to say about this movie.
