The third installation of the Resident Evil series has hit the books! I was lucky enough to see it Thursday night, and for fans of the previous two movies, it did not disappoint. Alice and the Umbrella Corporation, as well as a few thousand of our favorite T-virus infected undead have returned! With plenty of blood and gore to go around, as well as a decent story line, Resident Evil: Extinction definitely provides some entertainment.
Extinction picks up where the Apocalypse left off (duh.). The Umbrella corporation is trying again to develop a better cure for their own T-virus. After failing to capture Alice, Umbrella turns to creating clones of her in an attempt to find the proper blood factors to cure the virus. The man in charge of the research, Sam Issacs, has different plans. He instead is obsessed with his project to create “the Perfect Lifeform”. Meanwhile, the T-virus has run rampant throughout the world, infecting nearly everyone within weeks. The remaining survivors are nomadic, not being able to stay in one place for fear of drawing the flesh-craving infected to them. The real Alice is also wandering around, staying alive due to her superhuman abilities gained from the T-virus. As Issacs gets closer to capturing Alice, he discovers that Umbrella can’t control her as they expected…
Can’t have any spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that. Personally, I think that this film was enjoyable. The director (Russell Mulcahey) definitely tried hard to create those moments where you’re gonna get the crap scared out of you and jump out of your seat, and at times he is successful. There were also some decent action sequences, and plenty of blood. They also managed to keep the theme and feel of the previous movies alive, so if you enjoyed those films, you’ll most likely enjoy this one. The special effects were good, not spectacular but not bad either.
If you’re looking for the next big horror franchise, this is not it. However, if you’re a Resident Evil fan and you’re looking for more, look no further. You’re going to enjoy yourself. While predictable, it still is a pretty good romp. And even though its not for everybody, the people who want to see it should have a good time.
The Upside: Great for people who enjoyed the previous films in the series. Plenty of blood and gore, and Milla Jovovich is not bad to look at for a few hours.
The Downside: Somewhat predictable, and if you’re not into the series you probably won’t like it.
On the Side: Milla Jovovich’s clothing line designed Alice’s new costume for the film. Also, this is the first film trilogy based on a video game series!
