OK, I LOVE BOND, getting that out of the way, when I watched Quantam, I honest to God thought i walked into a Bourne movie. The camera was the same, the fighting style seemed the same (no more 1 good hit to the bad guy's face and he's out) . Yes, this movie was more "realistic", but since when is Bond like that? I like the quirky gadgets and bad acting and everything, it made Bond well Bond. I do however like the idea of developing a darker character but is making it almost identical to a Bourne movie necessary?
Don't misunderstand me, Bourne movies are great, and so are Bond movies. I just don't want to go to a Bond movie and come out thinking "I know it says Bond, but could they just as easily put Matt Damon into that movie without me noticing?" I just hope there are no more Bourne Bond's.
And I like the Gadgets haha

I would agree with most of your points there. Especially the future. I think the opera scene with the different players was very interesting, especially the small point of the character who says "I guess the opera isn't for everyone" (I know those aren't his exact words, but you know who I'm talking about) while everyone else is leaving. I think there's been a good development of how some of the villains are still slightly paranoid about being caught, where as that guy was set up as more of a top level villain who knows better.

I also thought the oil homage was very well done.

The only thing I can really say that I disagree on, I only partly disagree with you. I didn't have a huge issue with the editing, although, much like in the Bourne Ultimatum, I thought the shakiness of the camera during hand-to-hand combat was a bit frustrating. I get the point of it, but sometimes I just want to see the two dudes fighting.

I also agree that I didn't enjoy it as much as Casino Royale, but I think that's partly because the story of Casino Royale was better developed, mostly due to the card game. The slower pace of that part meant that you could further develop the characters etc.

I think we'll see a better third film, to be honest, because in the first we have the character established, and the whole idea of getting 'hurt' is put in, then you have the second where he is "out for revenge" or whatever, but you can see him turning into a much thicker skinned, emotionally detached person that was sort of a staple of the bond character. So now in the third, there's the possibility of pushing the character forward and able to "more easily" do the sleeping around and some of the almost carelessness of earlier versions of bond brought to the table.

I also absolutely love Craig as Bond, and have been a fan of his since seeing Layer Cake.

I think Mr. Craig is handsome. :)
I wrote a review of the movie and I think my viewpoint is indicative of my generation, so it might give you some perspective. I only gave it two out of five. (sorry) It still looks way better than the TV movies they used to make. Those look sooo bad!

I am a long time Bond fan and am not really missing the gadgets. Once they were introduced it always seemed like the writers had to put Bond in the exact situation where the gadget of the movie would save his life. It always felt too convienient, and too many of the gadgets were dumb and ultimately useless or way too unbelievable. My only real gripe with Quantum of Solace has to be the action scenes. I liked the action, but found the up close camera views and quick cut editing hard to watch and made things difficult to follow. Please pull the camera back and allow the sequences a little more time before changing angles etc. So yes very different from Casino Royale, but still a good entry in the series, the charachter did still develop (he let the guy at the end live), a whole new evil organization to challenge Bond has been found, and they seem capable of some global terrorism and evil, not like Eliot Carver and wanting media rights in China. Keep up the good work.

I actually really liked the title cards. I thought it was cool how they used culturally relevant fonts and placed them as part of the scene (for example in Russia it was written in paint on the road).

Bond has always been an athlete, but that goddamn rope scene was over the top. If not careful, they're going to do to Bond's strength and athleticism what they did to his gadgets and cars in the old films.

The location cards were similar to the episode titles in the TV show "Heroes," and I agree the concept doesn't fit well with James Bond movies. I would like to see Olga Kurylenko return, she seems to be quite an asset. Good review. Cheers!

I actually miss the gadgets. Now some of the gadgets from the previous films wouldn't work in this new series, but it would be nice to see Bond get his hands on some high tech equipment. Also, I miss Bond and Q sharing time together. "Oh grow up, 007!" It can work in this darker series. For example, the new Batman films, have Lucius and Bruce together in a very similar style as the old Bond films.

Edit: I guess I should of read Matt's post before posting my own.

Hey, the song's no LIVE AND LET DIE, but it's also not LICENSE TO KILL--the WORST Bond theme ever. It's also far more interesting than Madonna's DIE ANOTHER DAY. You would surely rank QoS's theme above DAD, correct?

(Spoiler alert: the only correct answer to my query above is, "correct." Any other answer is incorrect.)

I said they were "cool". Not great, not awesome, just "cool". They're the movie you watch when there ain't much else to do and you wanna shut your brain off for a few hours. My point was that when Jason Statham is kicking tons of ass, you actually see him kicking tons of ass as opposed to flashy jump-cuts and edits we've seen elsewhere (looking at YOU, "Bourne" movies.)

I do disagree with you there. Sure, we'd all love for Hollywood to give us some new, great, iconic characters like Bond or Batman -- but I don't think they have it in them anymore. At least, those kinds of forward thinking ideas don't make enough money.

For my money though, I am okay with reinventing certain characters for a new generation of viewers. If done well, it can give different generations their own version of the same great hero. At 25, I feel as if I can't lay claim to the Bond of old -- and though I love the work that Connery and Moore did, they will never be my vision of Bond for a modern world. Daniel Craig fills that role. And to you he might just be Bond in name only, but to me that is the Bond that want to see. The modern version of Bond. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I've stopped making sense now, haven't I?

Couldn't Boond be renamed and the movie be just as enjoyable? Did it have to be Bond? Why not have two franchises: The Bond one and the new Daniel Craig one?

Gawd... I hated the opening credits. It was like nails on a chalkboard. And I am referring entirely to the theme song, which is absolute garbage. Jack White's beats were good to start, but once the two of them got to the business of singing I was ready to start smacking myself in the face with a shoe. The graphics weren't bad, but the damn song ruined it for me.

I can't disagree with you on that last point -- it certainly isn't like the other 21 Bond movies. I don't have a problem with that. Then again, I am generally one of those "one foot in the pool" type fans who doesn't have a wholly vested interest in a franchise. That allows me to be flexible.

Actually, Robin might work, but that's another story...

Even though The Dark Knight has a sense of realism, it is larger than life in parts of the movie. While it's in a world like our own, it also lets you know at times that this isn't our world. Bond doesn't do that. They try to make us believe that it's real as best as they can. That's where the movie loses its shine. Over 20 Bond movies have been made where he used gadgets, slept with countless women, and has snappy catchphrases. Am I supposed to sit back and allow this huge change in Bond movies after 30 years of the same thing? Honestly, it just doesn't feel like Bond to me anymore. Heck, this sequel isn't even based on an Ian Flemming Novel...

Alright, I agree that the film could have used more gadgets, but you have to admit that they MI6 phone system was pretty cool. Personally I was happy to see something very sleek and modern, yet still somewhat believable.

I love gadgets just as much as the next guy, but if Daniel Craig were to bust out a watch with a friggin' laser beam it would take me right out of the movie. It just wouldn't work in the universe that they've created in this new Bond series. It is very similar -- since you brought up The Dark Knight -- to the way some things, namely characters such as Mr. Freeze and Robin, wouldn't work in the new Batman universe under Christopher Nolan.

Make sense?
